A/N: Romans 10:9-10
For if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved.
To God be the glory!
“Maya, wait!” nanlaki ang singkit na mata ni Sir Chief nang makita kung sino ang nasa pinto. Halos maitulak palayo ang nagulat ding si Stephanie. Nilingon niya ito bago tuluyang habulin si Maya, “I don’t want to see you when I return, Stephanie. Please don’t bother me ever again.”
Maya looked down as she felt him approached her.
“Maya, let me explain.” Richard’s voice was pleading her to look at him. He was in front of her now. He tried to hold her shoulders so she would look at him but Maya shrugged it off and look away.
“Bumalik ka na dun. Pasensiya ka na kung naistorbo ko ang ‘emergency meeting’ mo!” Maya’s word was calm but sharp.
“I was in a meeting. Richard answered patiently, “kakatapos lang and I was about to leave when Stephanie arrived. I didn’t know she was coming.” He felt panicky. He knew what the sight would’ve looked like to anyone who might’ve stepped in and doesn’t know what’s going on: Stephanie’s arms around him and his hands were on her shoulders even though he knew that he placed them there to keep her at bay and away from him. But Maya didn’t know that and for Richard it’s her opinion that matters most at this time.
TING! The elevator door opened. Maya immediately got in, Sir Chief followed. Good thing there’s no one inside so she tried to stay away from Sir Chief as far as the confines of the lift would allow her. She pursed her lips, deciding to completely ignore him who doesn’t seem to know how to handle her silence. He liked her better when she’s talkative rather than quiet because he doesn’t know what’s running in that beautiful head of hers when she is. She pressed the G button on the anterior right side and stared at the countdown of numbered lights above the elevator door as if it was the most amazing invention ever discovered.
“Maya, please don’t get mad.”
She cut him off without looking at his direction. “Hindi mo kailangang magpaliwanag, okay? Wala naman akong karapatang magalit eh. Sa mata ng tao, ako lang ang dating yaya ng anak mo at ikaw ang dati kong amo.” It was his undoing. He sounded very casual about it, as if they’re just talking about the weather. Maya began to feel self pity. The emotion was so new to her. She’s never felt so insecure about her status in Sir Chief’s life before. Thinking about it now, she realized Sir Chief’s reluctance in introducing her to the public and his kids as his girlfriend might be due to embarrassment. Because no matter how good she is as a flight attendant, she would always be branded as his daughter’s yaya. She held back a sob at that thought.
TING! Sir Chief held the elevator door for her so she could step out. The lobby is almost deserted except for the mid-shift receptionist and the security guard at the entrance/exit. Maya quicken her pace toward the direction of the door as Sir Chief tried to keep up with her. She abruptly halted to face Sir Chief when she felt that they were already out of earshot, causing Sir Chief to almost collide with her.
“Maya, please…” he groped for words and can’t seem to find any. He’s not used to Maya being indifferent and he doesn’t know her when she’s like this. All he wanted right now is to lock her in his arms and kiss her until she forgets everything except his love for her.
They stood there for a moment, eyeing each other. Maya’s doe eyes mirrored her miserable state of mind. “Maya, may karapatan kang magalit pero wala kang dahilan.” Sir Chief explained before she had the chance to avoid him, “I mean, you’re my girlfriend and as such, you have all the right to be angry if I’m having an affair, but you have no reason to be angry because there’s nothing going on between Stephanie and me.”
“E bakit magkayakap kayo?” Maya is not convinced but her heart skipped a beat with the way Ser Chief is looking at her.
He looked incredulous, “Magkayakap? Of course not!” mariing tanggi nito, “I was just trying to keep Stephanie away because she was forcing me to have dinner with her and I refused.”
Napaisip si Maya, trying to recall what she saw earlier. Well, in fairness, hindi naman talaga nakayakap si Ser Chief. Nakahawak lang sa balikat. Para itulak? Weh?! “Nakalambitin kaya sa leeg mo!” she has not realized that she’s said her thoughts aloud.
“Kaya nga I was trying to hold her away from me.” He inched closer to her, hoping her anger has dissipated. “Maya, please believe me. Kung may gusto ako kay Stephanie, sana noon pa naging kami na, long before I fell inlove with you. But I told you she’s not my type. Besides, I love you too much to even think of other girls.
Kinilig si Maya sa narinig. Her eyes twinkled. She can feel the sincerity in his voice. But the insecurity she felt earlier reared its ugly head. Her elation was dashed with anxiety.
She changed the topic and tried to bury her apprehension. “’Wag mo na ‘kong ihatid. Kaya ko ng umuwing mag-isa.” She gripped the handle of her luggage tightly, insecurity eating up all common sense and clouding her judgment.
“Maya naman…” he groaned in exasperation. “Didn’t you hear everything I said? Don’t you believe me?”
“Okay. Naniniwala na ‘ko. Kaya lang pagod ka na din. Mas mabuti pa kung makapagpahinga ka na rin agad tapos magtataxi na lang ako pauwi.” She felt tired all of a sudden and just wanted to be left alone to think.
“No. Ihahatid kita. Please let me do this. Kahit hanggang dun lang ako sa labas.” Giit nito. He can see that she was satisfied with his explanation but there’s something that’s still bothering her. He knew her only too well to know that now is not the time to ask and force her the issue. He would have to wait until she’s ready to confide what’s causing that unhappiness in her exquisitely expressive eyes.
Bumuntung-hininga si Maya. She doesn’t want to argue with Ser Chief anymore. She looked at him and gave him a swift nod which Richard took as a signal to take Maya’s hand and hold her luggage in his other hand as they walk the remaining short distance to his BMW. He opened the passenger door for Maya, put her luggage in the trunk, then slid in the driver’s seat. He stole a a warm glance in Maya’s direction before buckling his seatbelt and silently maneuvred out of the parking lot.

WHEN INLOVE (3)
“How’s your flight?” Richard attempted to make light conversation during the first few minutes of the ride to Emman’s condominium.
“Okay lang.” Matipid na sagot ni Maya.
“Do you have a flight tomorrow?” he asked again without looking at her direction as he focused on the road ahead.
“Wala.” Maya gave him another curt response, keeping her head bowed down with her hands folded in her lap.
Richard decided to drive quietly as he sighed his frustration. The remainder of the trip to Emman’s condo was a deafening silence, both of them engulfed in their own thoughts.
