Chapter 1 – Sweet Dreams

The air was filled with the scent of pine trees as the gentle wind blew. He touched the strands of her hair that were on her eyes and gently tucked them behind her ear. She felt his warm hand holding her while he slid a ring onto her finger. It was a simple gold band. She felt so happy as she looked up to him but his face was hazy. As she longed to see his face, she noticed the gold chain in his neck. She reached out for it and traced the chain with her finger. She sensed his face was moving closer to her face. Then, she heard him say.. “Maya.” Her heart leaped.

“Maya” She heard him say again but this time his voice became soft and almost feminine. It was a familiar voice.

“Maya, Maya, anak, gising na.” It was her mother! It was then she opened her eyes and realized that the scene she experienced was just a dream.

She turned to her side. She covered her head with a pillow while pounding her bed. “Ahhhhh. Eto naman. Bakit ba ganito lagi itong panaginip ko. “ She said while her mouth was covered with pillow.

Her mother, Mama Teresita, pulled out the covers and her pillow to make her move out of the bed.

“Nothing, Ma. Hindi lang ako excited bumalik sa Manila. Madaming gagawin, maraming problema.” She sat up to get ready for her bath.

“Maraming problema sa work or sa boyfriend? Nakipag-break ka naman ano? Alam ko ‘tong eksena na ‘to.” Mommy Teresita stated.

“Hindi, Ma. We’re just going thru something.” She admitted. Her mother knows her very well.

“Ma, you’ll never know. Malay mo minsan, sorpresahin tayo ni Kute.” She teased her.

“Naku Maya, ‘wag kang ganyan. Baka atakihin ako. Ay! Oo nga pala. May balita ako sa ‘yo.” Mama Teresita sat on the chair beside her bed and faced her.

“Sina Esme ay babalik na sa Pilipinas. Ang tagal na rin naming hindi nagkikita. Puro sa phone lang kami nag-uusap. Excited na ako, ikaw anak?”

“Po?” She paused for a while, hesitating what to say next, then said.

With Maya’s response, her mother got curious.

“I have nothing to share Ma. What ever happened between me and him is something that is between us.” Maya avoided her mother eyes.

“Yes, between the two of you.

“Okay, Ma. For your peace of mind, eto na lang po. We realized that we were too young to even consider that we could be together forever.”

“Ganoon lang ‘yon? Si Tita Esme mo at ako, umasang magiging isang pamilya tayo. Hanggang ngayon anak, umaasa kami. Simula bata pa kayo, gusto namin maging kayo. Akala naming walang pag-asa until isang araw umuwi kayong dalawa na magka-holding hands.”

“Maaaa, ano ba ‘yaaan.” Maya was feeling uncomfortable with the details of their conversation. She pleaded for her mother to stop.

Mom Teresita insisted on getting a long overdue explanation.

“Ma….” Maya was beginning to get upset.

Maya didn’t respond to her mother anymore. She went to the bathroom to ready herself to go back to Manila.

On the plane, she thought about her conversation with her mother. It brought back memories of her college life particularly memories of Richard.

Flash back – 10 years ago

Maya together with her friends were at PSU quadrangle were watching the track competition. Everyone was excitedly cheering on their own bets except Maya who was just watching; expressionless.

Tingan mo, everyone is cheering for Richard Lim.” Emman, her closed friend, encouraged her.

Emman probed at the same time jumping in delight as he saw Richard finishing first in the lap.

“Hindi ako asar. I just find him suplado. Feeling ang gwapo-gwapo. As if naman, he’s God sent.” Maya responded; rolling her eyes upwards. At that moment, she glanced at Richard who was just a few feet away from them. He was profusely sweating from the lap he just completed. He was getting his towel and when he looked up, their eyes met. Maya quickly turned away while Richard just smirked and left.

Emman didn’t see what just happened and continued probing Maya. “Huu, siguro hindi ka lang pinapansin. Marunong namang magsmile yon at sumagot pag kina-kausap.”

“Emman, I’ve known him for many years. Yung mga mommy namin, best friends since high school sa San Nicolas and up to now very close sila. Although mayaman sila, yung mommy n’ya mabait. Yung bahay namin, mga 5 houses lang away from each other.” Maya explained.

“O ganun naman pala. Let’s go, punta tayo sa engineering building. Doon tayo tumambay.” Emman invited.

“Emman, ikaw na lang. Pupunta ako sa basketball court. I’d rather watch Anton kesa makita ‘yang crush mong supladong singkit.”

I wouldn’t want to miss any opportunity to mingle with him. Afterall, it is his last semester and then he’ll graduate. Take note, graduating with flying colors considering he is always a deans lister. Ma mimiss ko s’ya girl. Ikaw?”

“Anu ka ba Emman, paulit-ulit tayo. Unlike you, I’m not a member of his fans club so I will not miss him.” She said with finality.

But in fairness, cute din ‘yang Anton Marquez mo. O sige, bye.” Kilig na kilig si Emman as he walked towards the engineering building.

As Maya saw her friend leave, she said to herself “Hayy, Emman kung alam mo lang. Tagal kong crush ‘yang singkit na ‘yan. He was always in my dream. So, I moved on.”
