CHAPTER 24

Maya felt giddy, in fact, too giddy. It was all because of Richard. Even though his lips just landed on her head, she seemed to burst due to kilig. It might’ve been just a simple gesture, but to her it’s worth more than gold. It just shows that even though he’s not the same Richard, his feelings might’ve been still the same.

She texted her mother the moment she was inside her condo unit, telling her that there’s someone tagging along with her. Her mom asked her if that friend of hers is staying until Sunday as well. And when Maya said yes, her mom said that her friend can have a sleepover in their house. Her mom immediately called when she finally informed them that her friend is a guy.

“Boyfriend mo, Maya?” Teresita asked as soon as Maya picked up her phone. “Nak, buntis ka ba? Kaya ka ba uuwi ng bahay? Nak naman, alam kong nasa tamang edad ka na pero –“

“Nay! Kalma lang po. Hindi ako buntis.” Maya said. She got nervous when Teresita mentioned the pregnancy thing.

“Sigurado ka, nak?”

“Opo. One hundred percent sure po.” She assured Teresita.

“Hay naman Maya!” Teresita sighed on the other line. “Kinabahan naman ako sa’yo. Akala ko buntis ka na!”

“Eh kasi naman, Nay, hindi mo naman ako pinag-salita. Sunud-sunod kaya yung mga sinasabi niyo.” She said, stifling her laugh. “Ngayong nalaman niyong lalaki yung kasama ko, papatuluyin niyo pa po ba siya dyan sa bahay?”

Teresita paused. “Eh ano bang rason at sasamahan ka pa niyan pauwi mo dito? Kaya mo naman ah. Sasakay ka lang ng bus, tapos jeep. Oh, anong hirap dun?”

“Nay, ano po eh ..” she gulped. “Umaatake po ulit yung phobia ko eh.”

“Ganun ba?” Maya sensed her mother worry. “Ganito, magpapacheck-up ka bukas dito, ha? Ipapatawag ko sa tatay mo.”

“Sige po, Nay. Basta wag na po kayong mag-alala, kasama ko naman po si Richard eh.”

“Kaya pala sasamahan ka. Sige, sabihin mo sa kanya na dito na lang tumuloy para hindi na siya gumastos. Pasasalamat ko na rin, ha?”

“Sige po, Nay. Goodnight po.”

“Goodnight din, Maya. Ingat kayo bukas.”

..

Richard arrived at her unit at precisely 7:30 in the morning. When Maya opened the door, smiles flew on their faces at the sight of each other like it has been years since they last met.

“Good morning!” Richard greeted her.

“G-good morning.” Maya greeted back. “Teka lang, kukunin ko lang yung gamit ko. Pasok ka muna.” They both went in and Maya went to grab one duffel bag.

“Bakit ang dami mong dala?” Richard said.

“Pasalubong ko ‘to. Ang tagal ko na kayang di nakakauwi.” Maya said, then she walked. “Tara na.”

She stopped when she felt Richard’s hand on hers. “Ako na’ng magdadala.” Then he smiled at her. “I’m already a burden. So let me.” He grabbed her bag and left. When Maya saw that he’s already meters away, she finally squealed. She just could not contain her kilig anymore.

“Maya?” Richard called. Maya quickly put on her normal face and turned to him. “Let’s go.” He further said. Richard was not moving so Maya quickly locked her door and rushed to his side.

Richard opened the passenger’s door before putting Maya’s things on the bunker. He saw Maya texting someone when he sat on the driver’s seat.

“Informing someone that we’re leaving?” he said. Oh boy, I do hope it is not that Simon guy.

Maya nodded. “Si Nanay, nagtatanong kasi kung nakaalis na tayo.” Richard sighed in relief. “Bakit?”

“Wala lang.” He smiled, then he started to drive. “I hope you don’t mind pero naka-off yung aircon, so I can roll the windows down for you.”

“Wala lang daw.” She teased. “Anyway, thank you saka sabi ni Nanay, sa bahay ka nalang daw matulog. Parang sleep over.”

“She would allow me? Alam ba niyang lalaki ang kasama mo?”

“Oo.”

“She already trusts me? Eh hindi pa nga niya ako kilala eh. What if may gawin akong hindi maganda?”

“Edi patay ka kay tatay.” She joked. “Listen, kung ayaw mong dun tumuloy, ayos lang. Hindi naman kita pinipilit eh.”

“There you go again, starting an argument. Wala naman akong sinasabing ayaw ko.” He said but to his surprise, Maya just laughed. “Why are you laughing?”

“Wala lang. I just find you amusing.” She said. Kahit naman noon pa eh.

“Sige, make fun of me. After I told you that you’re adorable, sasabihin mo lang na amusing ako?” he played along.

Maya continued to laugh making Richard to laugh too. Their ride went for hours but neither of them seemed to notice. They are completely occupied with talking to one another. Maya was surprised that when Richard’s car came to a stop. When she looked around, she saw that they’re already in front of their house.

“This is your house, right?” Richard asked when he saw Maya not making any movement. Maya answered with a nod. “Pero paano mo nalaman?”

Richard paused, and then he shifted so he can look at her. “Maya .. I ..” he sighed. “Listen. I know this sounds crazy but .. it’s my memory that told me where your house is.” He ran his hand through his hair. “Ang weird di ba? I don’t even know how my memory has this .. this memory! I don’t even –“

“Richard.” Maya interrupted. “Kalma lang. Wag mo nang isipin yun. Basta malalaman mo lahat kapag naalala mo na lahat.” She smiled and put her index fingers on the opposite sides of Richard’s lips, pushing them to produce a smile. “Smile  ka na lang.”

“I’m serious, Maya.” He said and he grabbed both of her hands in his.  “Paano ko nalaman ‘tong bahay mo?”

“Stalker kita.” She said in a serious face, trying to contain her laughter.

“W-what?” he stammered. “I .. I stalked you?”

Maya couldn’t resist it and let go of the laugh she’s been keeping. “Ang epic ng itsura mo Richard!” she said, still laughing.

“Yeah, yeah. Make fun of me.” He said, not laughing. He opened his door to go out and grab their stuffs from the bunker.

“Richard!” Maya called him when she saw him leave. “Sorry na. Ang pikon mo naman kasi eh.”

“Seryoso kasi ako.” He said, never lifting up his gaze as he grabbed their bags. When he decided to look up, Maya was already in front of him.

“Richard.” she said as she put her hand on top of his. Richard felt his heart’s unsteady beating. And he could not take his eyes off of their hands. “Be thankful na lang at nabalik na ang memories mo.” She continued to say. “Tara na. Baka makita pa tayo nina Nanay dito.” She left him and walked towards the gate.

Richard’s gaze finally shifted on their house. It’s a simple two-story house that looked very familiar to him. And at the sight of the garden beside the house, a thought immediately struck him.

I’ve been here before.

“M-Maya.” He called, wanting her to hear what his memory told him again. When she turned, he immediately opened his mouth “I’ve been –“

“Hep hep hep!” she interrupted, then she sighed. “Richard, nasa teritoryo ka namin, so I want to make a deal.”

“A deal?” he said, bewildered.

“Yes. Gusto kong huwag mo munang intindihin yung mga bumabalik mong memories. Saka mo na lang sila intindihin, kapag buo na. Kasi kung tingi-tinging ganyan, wala tayong mararating. Lagi ka lang magtatanong.” She explained. She has to do this for she was getting too excited for him. Maya wants him to remember his memories on his own, with her just helping on the sidelines. She’s afraid that if she told the whole truth to him, he’ll not believe it especially the part where he became an angel. She’s afraid that it will all crumble down if she rushed it. So even if it’s hard, Maya’s willing to do it.

Richard paused, giving what she said a thought. For him, Maya’s got a point. Those little parts of his memories will all lead to nothing if he doesn’t know which way they are all connected. It will just leave him thinking. “Fine. It’s a deal.”

It’s as if on cue, Maya’s mother appeared from the front door, calling her daughter’s name. “Maya!” The daughter turned around and walked to meet her mother halfway. “Nay!” They both hug each other.

“I miss you Nay!”

“Na-miss din kita anak.” The two were both on tears when Arturo saw them.

“Oh, nagda-drama na naman kayo?” he said, then he laughed. He gave his daughter a hug and let go of him when he sighted Richard.

“Ah, ikaw ba yung kasama ni Maya?” Arturo said as he walked to him. Richard gave him a nod and said, “Opo. Magandang tanghali po.”

Maya quickly went near them. “Richard, siya yung Tatay ko, si Tatay Arturo.” She said to Richard. “Tay, siya po si Richard, anak po –“

“Maya’s officemate.” He finished Maya’s sentence. “Glad to meet you po Sir.” Richard held his hand out which Arturo accepted. “Ako rin Richard.” He said as they shook hands. “Tara, pasok na tayo sa loob nang makakain na.”

“Tara na, Richard?” Teresita asked. Richard gave her a smirk as an answer then also held his hand out. “Richard po.” Teresita willingly accepted his hand for a shake. “Nanay Teresita na lang Richard. Pasok ka at para madala na rin yung gamit mo dun sa isang kwarto.”

Arturo and Teresita proceeded inside, leaving Maya and Richard alone. Richard was about to take a step when something came back again.

How I wish I could actually meet them.

It’s something from his past again. It was something he said. He paused, waiting for something more to come back but nothing more followed.

“Richard! Tara na! Ang init o!” Maya said. But her face soften when she saw him thinking again. “Richard. Have faith.”

That last two words seemed to trigger something from his mind but he just shook it off. He looked at Maya and saw her concern for him. He let go of a sigh and put the smile back on his lips. I want to keep our deal.

..

Maya showed Richard his room which is just in front of hers. It was small compared to his bedroom but he didn’t mind. After all, he was there to look after Maya. The claustrophobic seemed to have forgotten that she has phobia the moment she arrived at their house. After showing Richard his room and making sure that he’s comfortable, she immediately went down to help her family to prepare for lunch. After a few minutes, lunch is served.

“Richard, ito si Kute, sister slash brother ko.” Maya teased.

The two shook hands and finally settled on their seats. Arturo seated at the center end of the table, with Teresita and Kute on his left, and Maya and Richard on his right. After saying grace, they finally eat. Richard remembered that she told his parents that her family uses food as a medium for conversation, and it is proven right, for Maya opened up the topic about how she misses her family.

After a few rounds more of their banter, the attention shifted to Richard.

“So, Richard, anong posisyon mo sa LAS?” Arturo asked.

“Ay nako, Tay. ‘Yan ang soon-to-be –“ Maya started. “I’m a co-worker. Of Maya.” He said. He gave Maya a meaningful smile as if telling that he wants to keep a low profile.

“Richard, boyfriend ka ba ng anak ko?” Teresita asked.

He was about to answer when Maya said “Nay! Hindi no!”

“Uyyyy! Si bunso! Ano ka ba, spokesperson nitong si Richard?” her sister teased. “Pasensya ka na sa mga tanong nina Nanay, ha Richard? First time kasi ni Maya magdala ng lalaki dito.”

“It’s okay.” He only said. I’m glad to be the first.

The Dela Rosa’s sensed Richard’s  discreetness so instead of keeping it as it is, they even pressed him to be noisy. They asked them personal questions regarding on where he studied, what his course is and so on. When they asked him what his parents’ works are, he simply told them that his mother is a house wife and that his father works for a company.

“Richard ..” Arturo said, as if testing the waters. “Richard .. hmm. Alam mo, ang pamilyar ng pangalan mo.”

“Common name po yung Richard eh.” He joked, making them giggle. But Arturo remained as he is.

“Hindi eh, familiar talaga, parang –“

“Ahh! Tay! Alam ko na.” Kute said. “Diba may Richard sa balita na nagising daw sa comatose niya?” she continued. “Yung Richard Lim?”

All of their eyes immediately went to him. “Ikaw si Richard Lim, nak?” Teresita asked.

Richard sighed, raised his brows and looked at Maya. “I guess my cover’s been blown.” The moment he said that, he heard gasps from Maya’s family.

“Bunso! Eh big-time pala tong manliligaw mo!” Kute said.

“Kute! Hindi ko nga siya manliligaw!” Maya said with reddened cheeks. Well, boyfriend ko siya. Uhm was my boyfriend?

“Pero Richard, ayos ka na ba? Ano bang nangyari at na-coma ka?” Teresita asked.

Without having much choice, Richard told them his story. Starting from his accident until the moment he woke up. He also told them about his case of having repressed memories. After that, Kute even asked him if he is indeed the famous Roberto Lim’s only son. Richard confirmed it with his yes.

“Bunso.” Kute said, after realizing something. “Bagay pala kayo nitong si Sir Richard eh.”

“Richard will do. Wag na yung Sir.” Richard said immediately after hearing the change in Kute’s address to him.

“Kute! Ano na naman ‘yan!” Maya said.

“Eh kasi, may phobia ka, may problema siya sa memory. Edi tutulungan niyo ang isa’t-isa?” she teased, then laughs at what she just said. “Doon nagsisimula ang tunay na pag-ibig!” The whole family laughed, leaving Maya and Richard blushing.

“Pero bukod pa dun, basta, pamilyar pa rin yung Richard sa tenga ko.” Arturo further said. They resumed eating when he stopped abruptly. “Ah! Alam ko na. Maya, di ba nabanggit mo na siya dati?”

Maya’s heart started pounding. Oh no, Tay. Don’t say it!

“Hindi ba, ang sabi mo, yung nagligtas sa’yo sa aksidente mo dati, Richard ang pangalan?” He turned to Richard.

“Ikaw ba ‘yon, Richard?”
