NT: Ah ganun ba Nak. Sige sa susunod na lang siguro.
Maya: Sige po Nay, akyat muna ko.
NT: Maya, may problema ba?
Maya: Nay, wala po. Napagod lang po ako sa biyahe. Pahinga lang po ako saglit.
And with that, Maya left her Nanay Teresita and headed to her room. She got something from the drawer of her nightstand. She sat on her bed hugging her knees as fresh tears were rolling. She stared at that embroidered handkerchief she’s been keeping for years.
The night-long of crying was now taking its toll on her. Her eyelids were heavy and swollen and add to that the throbbing pain in her head due to lack of sleep and continuous crying. Despite that, she tried so hard to focus on her work that day. Yes indeed, she tried. She was either inattentive, staring blankly at her phone or spacing out. She never thought it would be this hard. The pain was lingering no matter how much she cried the night before.
“I thought it will work out, that we will work out. Almost.” She thought.
She was still seated in her swivel chair after office hours. As she watched the sunset through her window, she noticed something that made her smile for the first time that day. It was the yellow Tulip that was sent to her by an unknown sender weeks ago. She was amused at how a total stranger made her smile despite her situation. She felt a bit light after that. She then decided to go home. She was almost out of the building when her phone rang. She was expecting but to her dismay. It was James.
Maya: Hi James. (she said flatly)
James: You didn’t sound like you’re glad I called you up. (he chuckled.)
Maya: I am James.
James: Wow my dear bestfriend! I can really feel the enthusiasm in your voice! (he said sardonically)
Maya: You’re always in time my friend..
James: Why? What’s wrong?
Maya: What I meant was you called at the right moment because I miss you. Yeah, that’s it I miss you already.
James: Ms. Dela Rosa, you know I’m not buying that, don’t you?
She was silent.
James: Let’s have dinner, your treat!
James: Of course! You need my ears, my shoulders and my counseling expertise tonight! Nothing’s free, you know! (he chuckled)
Maya: Fine. My treat.
James: Be ready. I’ll be ordering the most expensive one on the menu, okay?
Maya: You’re silly James! Bye.
She enjoyed her dinner with James. He asked about her problem but when he felt her hesitation in discussing it, he respected her. His presence somehow alleviated the pain she’s feeling. He never failed to cheer her up no matter what situation she is in. She was glad he called her. His company made her forgets the thing that hurts even for a while.
But the sadness crept again to her whole being as she arrived at her condo. She crouched at the side of her bed and sat there hugging her knees. She put her face into her hands as tears began to spring. That’s when she realized she was alone. She’s been living on her own for years, but it’s only now that she felt that she was indeed alone and unwanted.
The next morning, she packed her things and clothes. She decided to stay at her parents’ house for the meantime. Last night was a nightmare. She longed for her Nanay’s embrace so here she is packing like she’s having a vacation for a month. She’s not sure of how long will she be staying there.
Mamang: O apo, Anong nangyari? Bakit nag-alsa balutan ka?
Nanay Teresita: Nak binenta mo na ba yung condo mo?
Maya: Nay, Mang!
Maya: Mamang talaga! Payakap nga po!
Manang: Asus, ang batang ito o o! Naglalambing!
She was happy that she decided to stay in her parent’s house. The presence of her family made her feel at ease and loved. She missed them, not as if she lost contact with them but she missed spending the whole day with them eating, chatting, laughing and bonding. For a while, she forgot about the pain.
Knock, Knock, Knock
NT: Nak, pwede bang pumasok? (She said as she knocked on the door of Maya’s bedroom.
Maya: Sige po Nay. Pasok na po kayo. Inaayos ko lang po ang gamit ko.
Nanay Teresita sat on her bed and gestured her to sit beside her.
Maya: Si Nanay talaga! Naglalambing ka din Nay no?
NT: Maya Nak, halika dito
Maya: O sige po. (she said as she laid herself on the bed with her head on Nanay Teresita’s lap.)
NT: May gusto ka bang pag-usapan?
Maya: Wala naman po. Nanay talaga oh!
NT: Nak, kilala kita..
She took her time to answer as Nanay Teresita was patiently waiting for her answer. She heaved a sigh.
NT: O sige Nak. Good night.
Maya: Good night po Nay. (she hugged and kissed her Nanay on her cheeks)
After Nanay Teresita left the room, she continued to fix her things when she heard another knock.
Kute: Bunso! Gising ka pa ba?
Maya: Oo Kute!
Namiss mo ko no?
Kute: At feel na feel mo naman?
Maya: Haha, pero maiba ako. Pwede ba akong magtanong sa’yo?
Kute: Hmmmm.. Mukhang seryoso yan ah! O sige.
Kute: Alin yung kasal?
Kute: Hindi kasi ganung kadali Maya.
You need to have the right reasons.
Maya: O e di may pag-asa nga!
Kute:Ikaw talaga bunso!
Good night. Haha
And with that, Kute left Maya’s room. She lay in her bed. She can’t help but think of her conversation with her Nanay and Kute.
You need to have the right reasons.”
She kept on playing and playing their conversation on her mind and finally the Sandman came.
After 4 days, she decided to go back to her condo. She was a bit better now. She was at her front door fishing her keys when she noticed something. It was a potted tulip like the one in her office but this time it’s not yellow, it’s red. She read the note that came with it but still no sender.
“Try to search the meaning of Red Tulips and you’ll know who you are to me.”
