CHAPTER 35

It was the perfect Saturday morning. The sun is shining bright yet it seemed that it’s too lazy to give its full warmth. It was supposed to be a great day for Maya, but no. Maya seemed to experience the exact opposite of it. Last Friday night was like hell to her. For the last time, Maya looked around her condo unit to find Richard’s necklace. And while looking for it, she made a huge mess inside her unit making her have an unintended general cleaning. Instead of admiring blessed Saturday morning, Maya was still asleep.

In the middle of her deep sleep, Maya heard her door bell ringing around her place. It’s like the person ringing it is not contented that she pressed it again and again along with knockings on her door. Maya couldn’t take the noise anymore and decided to get up from her bed. She opened the door without even peeking at the peep hole to know who it was. Liza’s worried face welcomed her.

“O Maya? Are you okay? Are you sick?” Liza asked.

“Ayos lang ako, Liza.” Maya answered as she rubbed her eyes, then she yawned. “May kailangan ka ba?”

Liza’s jaw dropped at Maya’s question. “Maya, seryoso ka?” then she stepped inside, not waiting for Maya to let her in. “Kakagising mo lang?”

Maya crossed her brows and nodded. “Oo, ano namang masama dun?”

Liza shrieked and grabbed Maya by her shoulders and shook her. “Mayaaa! Do you even know what today is?”

“Oo naman!” Maya said, her brows still crossed. “Sabado ngayon di ba? Walang pasok.”

“Yes!” Liza exclaimed. “Walang pasok. And do you know why? Do you know what will happen later at six in the evening?”

“Ha? Ano bang sinasabi –“ Maya stopped abruptly. Shit. “Liza! Mamaya na yung anniversary!” she exclaimed.

“Oo, and I came here para ayusan ka. And mamaya, dadating na si Sir Richard para kaunin ka.” Then she pulled Maya and pushed her toward her bathroom. “Kaya Maya bilisan mong maligo, dali na. Gamitin mo na yung blower mo para matuyo agad ang buhok mo.” Liza successfully pushed Maya inside her bathroom and closed its door. “Maya, bilisan mo ha? Makikielam na ko sa kitchen mo, ipagluluto na kita, dalian mo!”

Maya just leaned against her bathroom door and buried her face on her hands as she mentally scolded herself. Maya bit her lip and looked at the watch she’s wearing.

11:05

Her eyes widened and quickly went inside the shower. Liza was right – she needs to do things quickly. As Maya took a bath, Liza was on the kitchen preparing her breakfast. She was planning to fry eggs but was stop from doing so when she saw leftovers in Maya’s fridge. Liza just took and threw it in the oven. After a few more minutes, Maya emerged from her bedroom, just fresh from her bath.

“Maya, pinainit ko na lang yung pagkain mo sa fridge, ayos lang ba?” Liza asked.

“Ah, oo, ayos lang Liza. Yan din yung binabalak ko kagabi eh.” Maya replied.

“Bakit parang ang dami pang natira? May bisita ka ba kagabi?”

Maya made her way to her kitchen and pulled out the dish from the oven. “Nagdinner kami.” She got rice on her plate to start eating.

“Dinner with whom?” Liza asked, amusement flowing everywhere on her face. She has this feeling who was with her office mate last night. Maya sat on her dining area while Liza sat on the couch at her living room, with her brows raised up by Maya’s statement.

“Kasama si Richard.” Maya mumbled while munching. Liza squealed on the other hand.

“Omg, girl. Teka nga, kayo na ba ni Sir Richard?” Liza asked.

Maya flushed. “E-ewan ko. Ang alam ko kasi hindi pa.”

“Hindi daw oh. Pero parang kayo na eh. Lagi kayang nasa’yo yung atensyon ni Sir Richard tapos ang sweet niyong dalawa lagi. Tanda mo nung nag-aayos tayo nung sa venue the other day tapos niyakap ka niya mula sa likod? Napansin niyo bang lahat ng employees nakatitig sa inyo nun or hindi niyo lang talaga napansin kasi may sarili kayong mundo?” Liza stated making Maya completely flushed. “Teka lang, Maya, eh di ba may sinasabi kang guy sa’kin dati na gusto mo? Ano nang nangyari sa kanya?”

Maya couldn’t help but smile. “Liza, si Richard ‘yon.” She said, making her friend’s eyes widen and to start squealing again. Maya could also feel that happiness inside her heart. Who would’ve thought that her suffering is over and that Richard is hers again? Well, not completely hers yet but Maya knows that Richard will not let go of her, and she will not let him slip away again.

..

“Good morning, Ma. Good morning, Pa.” Richard greeted with a smile as he made his way to his seat on the dining table.

“Someone’s in a good mood.” Esmeralda said amused by her son’s mood. “I bet you’re too excited for tonight.”

“Yes, Ma. Ang tagal ngang mag-gabi eh.” He said. “Ah, Pa, yung plano ko ha.”

Roberto chuckled. “Yes, yes. Don’t worry, son. Ayos na lahat.”

“Thanks Pa.” Richard answered.

Esmeralda put her hand on top of her son’s. “Ricky, I’m so happy for you. Your Papa and I are.”

Richard returned a smile to his parents. He could never be more thankful to them. “Thank you, Ma, Pa.” The he breathed deeply. “Let’s just hope I’ll get the answer that I want.”

“Oh, you will son.” His father said.

..

The whole afternoon seemed too fast for Maya. Liza immediately styled her hair after she ate lunch. She was also the one who put on Maya’s make up even though Maya insisted that she’d do it. Maya was all set even though it’s just three in the afternoon. And when she was done, she helped Liza to fix herself. When it was nearly five, they were finally ready.

“Liza, thank you, ha? Promise talaga, babawi ako.” Maya said.

“Naku, Maya, nakailang sabi ka na nyan kanina. Saka don’t worry, sa love story niyo pa lang ni Sir, bawing bawi na.” She teased. “O sya, uuna na ko. “Nasa baba na daw si Ryan eh.”

“Si Ryan?” Maya asked.

“Oo. Eh kasi, malapit lang daw yung place niya dito. Saka Maya, fan din yun ng love team niyo ni Sir lalo na nung umamin daw si Sir sa kanila na nanliligaw nga siya. O sya sige na. Mamaya na lang.”

“Sige Liza, thank you ulit! Ingat.”

“Ay Maya, meron pa palang way para makabawi ka.” Liza said, stopping near the front door.

“Ano?”

“Invited ako sa kasal ha?” Liza said and head outside, leaving Maya with that blush on her cheeks again.

..

Richard is all suited up. He’s ready. He took one final glance on the mirror to make sure that he looks fine. Hell, I’m nervous. He took one deep breath and dialed up the number he’s been meaning to call. On the third ring, someone picked up.

“Hello, Richard. Napatawag ka?” The mere sound of that voice on the other line made Richard even more nervous.

“N-nay Teresita, nandyan po ba si Tatay Arturo?” Richard asked.

“Nandun sa garden, nak. Teka pupuntahan ko lang.” Teresita said. Richard waited a few seconds before someone spoke on the other line again. “Richard, nak, eto na si Arturo.”

“Hello, Richard. Bakit ka napatawag? Ah, pasabi nga pala sa tatay mo, congratulations, saka sa’yo na rin. Ngayon yung anniversary nung LAS diba?” Arturo said.

“Ah, salamat po. Don’t worry po, ipaparating ko po kay Papa yung bati nyo.” Richard said then he gulped. “Ah, Tay, if nandyan pa po si Nay Teresita, I think mas mabuti po na i-loudspeaker niyo po yung cellphone.”

Arturo sensed that Richard has something important to say to he did what Richard asked him to. Teresita was seated beside him. “Richard, okay na, nakaloudspeaker na.”

Richard took one deep breath, like he wants to get all the courage he can get. This time is really different from when he was drunk. There’s nothing that makes him to spit out the words he wanted to say. It’s like his heart is in his throat.

“Tay, Nay, tonight is the night.”

..

Maya was facing back and forth inside her condo. It’s already five in the afternoon. Richard texted her earlier saying that he’ll pick her up at five but he still hadn’t arrived. While trying to calm herself, her phone rang.

“Hello, Nay.” Maya said as soon as she put the phone on her ear.

“Hello, nak.” Teresita said, her voice wobbly.

“Nay? Ayos lang po ba kayo? Ano pong nangyari?” Teresita’s tone in her voice seemed to make Maya worried.

“Wala wala. Wag mong isipin to.” Teresita said as she wiped her tears. “Nasan ka na? Kasama mo na ba si Richard?”

“Hindi pa po siya nadating eh. Baka nga po hindi sumundo eh.” Maya said.

“Ay nak, hindi yan. Susundo yan, sure ako.” Teresita said.

“Salamat, Nay.” Maya sighed. “Hay nako, Nay. Nitong mga nakaraang araw, ang saya ko lagi.”

“Gawa ni Richard no?”

Maya paused before answering. A smile crept on her face because of Teresita’s answer. Mothers know best talaga. “Opo.”

Teresita’s eyes started welling up again. “Alam mo nak, masaya kami ng tatay mo para sa inyong dalawa. Alam naming aalagaan ka ni Richard.”

“Salamat po, Nay, pero bat po ganun? Nanliligaw pa lang naman po si Richard ah. Parang iba na po yung pahiwatig ng sinabi niyo?”

“Basta nak. Malalaman mo rin. Sige na, baka makita pa ko ng Tatay mo. Ang sabi kasi niya wag na kitang tawagan eh. Sige na. Babay. Love you nak!”

“Po? Bakit ayaw ni Tatay? Nay?” Maya continued to ask but only got the dead tone on the other line as her answer. Anong meron?

Her doorbell rang again. This time, Maya knows for sure that it’s already Richard. Nervously, she walked to her door and opened it.

Richard was wearing a black tuxedo with a white shirt inside. A bow tie was placed around his neck making him look more handsome than ever. The two were speechless at the sight of each other. Richard couldn’t help but look at the beautiful woman in front of him. Maya was wearing a red dress that she picked among the hundreds of dresses that Liza made her try. Earlier was a perfect Saturday morning, and now, it seemed like their evening is a magical one.

“You look beautiful, Maya.” Richard said when he was able to find his voice.

Heat rose to Maya’s cheeks. “Thank you.”

Richard just smiled at her. “Let’s go?”

..

The venue for the anniversary was totally transformed. It was all different from the place they left the other day. There’s fog on their feet, the tables decorated with old models of aircrafts, the stage is lighted up, and behind it, a huge tarpaulin is hung from above where a collage is printed. The collage is made up of the different logos of LAS through the years and also with the logos its partners in business, but imprinted at the center is the huge name of Lim Aviation Services.

Everyone inside is in a festive mood, each of them is chatting with their officemates, some with the dates they brought with them. Our lovebirds made their way to their table which is close to the stage. Roberto and Esmeralda were already seated when they got there. Richard’s parents greeted Maya just in time before the program started. A video presentation was shown of the journey of LAS to its position now. When the video ended, Roberto was called up on stage for his speech.

“My fellow employees, first I would like to thank everybody here not only because they are a part of the company but also because of the love each one of you has given in making this event possible. For those of you who don’t know, most of them rushed here the moment they received the news that our planner is in short of men. I am truly, forever grateful to you. It just proves that in the 25 years of existence of Lim Aviation, we didn’t just produce aircrafts, but we also produced a family. A family where everybody is there in times of one’s trouble, a family where they would sacrifice, and a family where everyone works hand in hand to make everything possible.

“During those years, we lost members, and we gain new ones; we faced turbulences and we faced many successes. You see, our company is like a huge hangar and we are its aircrafts. And no matter how we look, how we work, how damaged we are or how newly made we are, this hangar will always be here to accept us. And it’s for us aircrafts to make this hangar grow.

“I am, too, an aircraft. But unlike most of you, I’m already an old one. My journey is marked by the many scratches and scars found on the exterior of my aircraft. I’ve been through a lot. And I could never thank everyone who was there for me to fix me and to support me during those tough days. I could’ve been a more miserable aircraft if they are not by my side.

“But as all of you know, time will come that this aircraft will no longer be capable of leading the other aircrafts behind him, and a new one will lead. After 25 years, this aircraft in front of yours is now going to rest. I am now going to just stay at my hangar and guide you from afar. As for the new one that will be with you for the next years, I would like you to meet your new CEO, my son, Richard Lim.”

Applause breaks in when a spotlight was focused on Richard and stood up for everyone to know it’s him.

“My son might be a younger model than I am, but I assure you that he’s going to follow the stream that I left. I personally made the scars in his exterior for him to know what he will be going through. And Richard, I have trust and I have faith in you. I know you will exceed every legacy that I’ve made. Always remember that I and your Mama are always proud of you and I also happened to know that the woman seated beside you is extremely proud of you, too.”

Laughs are heard from the room but majority is the teasing. Yes, Maya was truly proud of Richard but as of the moment, she just wants to be eaten alive. Her face was bowed down, wanting to hide the redness of her face. A hand went under her chin, lifting her head. And when she looked up, Richard was smiling at her. “Thank you.” He said, and clasped his hand with hers, bringing it to his lips for a kiss. Filled with kilig, Maya just nodded and scooted closer to put her head on Richard’s shoulders.

“So for the last time, I want to thank everybody here in LAS. And remember that you’re not just employees, because in here, we are members of this humongous family. Thank you, and good evening.”

When Roberto finished his speech, everybody inside the room stood up to give him a standing ovation. Roberto’s speech was truly wonderful and it touched everyone’s hearts. Richard gave his father a hug when he came back to his seat.

The night was still young and the event is still ongoing. But Richard wants to frantically drag Maya outside so that he can engage his plan. He scooted near his father and whispered his excuse. Roberto obliged and bid him good luck, as well as his mother. Richard then stood and grabbed Maya’s hand.

“Let’s go?” he said.

“Ha? Where to?” Maya curiously asked.

“I need you to go with me.” He said.

“Saan?”

“Basta. You’ll know when he get there.”

“Eh Ricky, hindi pa naman tapos yung program tapos hindi pa rin nase-serve yung food.” Maya reasoned out.

“I promise na may maaabutan pa tayo kapag nakabalik tayo and we’ll eat on our way. The soon we get out from here, the sooner we’ll get to where I want to take you.”

Maya paused for a bit. “Oy, Ricky ha, ayoko ng plano mong yan.” She said as she tries to remove her hand around his.

Richard chuckled. “No, silly. Whatever it is your thinking, I swear, hindi yun yon. So c’mon let’s go.” This time Richard stood up, bringing Maya with him. He looked back at Roberto and his father just gave him a smile.

Richard ushered Maya inside his car and turned to her. “Sasama ka rin pala eh.” He started the engine and put shifted the gear. But before Richard can drive off, Maya’s hand in his stopped him. “What’s the matter?”

Maya took a deep breath. “Ricky, may .. may dapat ka munang malaman. Tungkol ‘to sa memory mo. Kasi –“

“Maya, you don’t have to –“

“Hindi, Ricky.” Maya cut him off. “May dapat kasi akong isauli sa’yo, kaso nawala ko. Kaya pwede bang bago tayo pumunta sa dapat mong puntahan, puntahan muna natin yung mga lugar na gusto kong ipakita sa’yo.”

“Maya, I .. I don’t understand.” Richard confusedly said.

“Basta, Ricky. Mamaya ka na lang magtanong. Basta ako muna, please?”
