Richard: So why are you here? And how did you get here in the first place?
Maya: Sir Chief, pag ka alis po ninyong lahat kanina, nagising si Abby and she was so upset kasi wala na kayong lahat. She was crying and crying, hindi namin mapatahan. Sabi nya sa Ipad nya, she also wants to go to school like her Ate Nikki and she also wants to wear school uniform.
I tried to calm her down pero hindi ko talaga mapatahan. Nakaka awa nga eh. You can feel from how she cried na sobrang sakit ng loob nya. But I ended up here kasi –
Richard: WHAT? You drove all the way here? Just the two of you?
An enraged Richard almost stood from his seat. But upon seeing the startled face of Maya who was obviously trying to be brave in finishing her explanation, Richard retreated and lounged back to the chair, not only to calm himself but Maya as well.
Maya: W-wait lang Sir Chief! Sorry po. Mali na po kung mali, eh hindi po kasi kayo sumasagot sa phone nyo and Abby was pleading to see you and I got desparate.
Hindi ko naman matiis yung bata. Nakaka awa naman. Sobrang lungkot. She was so devastated and I thought baka makasama po sa kanya.
Richard’s enraged state was slowly repressed by Maya’s explanation. Admittedly, Richard was appeased by the thought that Maya truly loves his daughter and just like a mother, would do anything for her welfare.
Hindi naman ako kaskasera magmaneho eh, and we were both wearing seatbelts! We got here safe!
That was it. With Maya’s last statement, Richard was subdued and gave in to laughter.
Richard: Hahaha! That’s funny. Nahawa ka na agad kay Stephanie? Okay, nandito na ‘to. But Maya, the end does not justify the means. Next time mag sabi ka muna.
Maya: Okay, find! Sabi ko nga po, you were not answering my calls. So, I will just call Liza next time.
Richard: Richard took out his phone from his pocket and confirmed that he had several missed calls from Maya. Sorry, I was talking with someone and the phone was put on silent mode.
Maya: Yeah, right, ayaw pa istorbo ng meeting. With the lady lawyer…yung hindi maalis yung lips sa pag halik sa inyo kanina? Hahaha.
Richard: Richard felt uncomfortable with Maya bringing up the topic. Yes, that’s Ryan’s colleague, Atty. Ghie Ramos. So… have you eaten lunch?
Maya: Uy si Sir Chief, umiiwas sa topic…Hahaha! Wha?! You are blushing!
Maya: Kaya pala wala kang social life or girlfriend.
Maya: Kasi marami palang umaaligid na babae sa yo eh, you don’t need social life to have a girlfriend and mukhang maraming more than willing maging girlfriend mo, kahit corny ka. Like Atty. Ghie.
Richard: That’s not true, and I’m not corny!
Maya: Anong not true? Eh kita nyo nga po pano makahalik sa ‘yo in public, hindi ka nga makagalaw, you did not even respond to her kiss. Hahaha Sir Chief, namumula ka po talaga!
Richard: Richard shakes his head with a grin. Nag meso beso ako sa kanya but she didn’t pull away after, and I didn’t want to be rude. So, please just answer me, have you eaten lunch?
I’m sure she’ll be happy to see you, and she’ll be okay by then.
Richard: No! Let’s all eat lunch together somewhere.
Maya: Talaga? You’ll take us out for a lunch out?
Richard: Hahaha! Yes,Maya. We’ll eat lunch out. But, uhm…are you hungry already?
Maya: Ay Sir Chief, tulog pa si Abby, napagod siguro kaiiyak. Okay lang ako, hindi pa ako busog! Ay! Nakakahawa talaga si Stephanie! What I meant is, hindi pa ako gutom.
Richard: Hahaha! That’s a Freudian Slip.
Akala ko ba you still have meeting after nung kanina with Atty. Ghie. Eh bakit tayo mag lunch out?
Richard: I forgot to tell Liza to buy me lunch so I won’t be having a working lunch. Besides, Abby’s here to see me, right? I’ll drop anything just to have time with her.
Ghie?
Richard: Richard frowned upon hearing Maya’s question but responds immediately. Maya, don’t assume things from what you saw a while ago. Eh di sana –
Maya: Ay Sir Chief, I’m so sorry. That’s your personal life and it’s none of my business. Yung about sa kiss ni Atty. Ghie kanina, iniinis ko lang po kayo, it’s not my intention to intrude.
Again, Richard and Maya were so absorbed with their conversation, they did not realize Abby already woke up and was running towards them.
Richard: No, Maya. It’s not –
Abby! How’s my baby? Abby showered Richard with kisses all over his face.
Maya: Hi Abby! Ang bilis naman ng nap mo. Happy ka na to see Daddy? Abby responds by nodding her head.
Richard: Are you hungry baby? You want to eat?
Abby responds by nodding her head again, this time vigorously and with a big smile on her face.
The three went out of Richard’s office with smiles on their faces. Richard was carrying Abby while Maya trailed behind with her right hand being held by Abby, as if she was making sure Maya would not be left behind.
Richard: Liza I’ll have my lunch break. You know what to do. Just cancel my early afternoon appointments if necessary.
Liza: With a raised eyebrow and a teasing smile, Liza answers. Sir, akala ko ba you cannot cancel?…but of course, I can always cancel for you if you say so!
Maya: Liza, Mr. Lim will take us out for a lunch out!
I wouldn’t mine cancelling and re-scheduling everything for him. Enjoy lunch! Bye Abby!
With the beautiful sight before her, Liza hurriedly took out her mobile phone and took photographs of the three with their unguarded moments. Awwwww is all that Liza could say before she clutched her phone to her chest.
While waiting for their food to arrive, Richard laughed his heart out as Maya animatedly narrate to him her encounter with Stephanie. Maya impersonated her, complete with body movements, facial expression and the bizarre English language. It was only after the food arrived that the three had a quiet moment together while enjoying lunch. However, Maya could not help break the silence.
Maya demonstrates to Abby how to eat spaghetti, unmindful that Richard is watching too.
Richard: Maya, you have sauce all over your mouth. Now you’re messy at 20! Hahaha!
Maya: Hmm?! Talaga? As Richard expected, Maya stuck out her tongue and licked the sauce off from her mouth. Meron pa po, Sir Chief?
Richard: Wala na, but y-you are talking and your mouth is so full.
Maya: Eh kinakausap nyo ako eh.
Richard: Are you like that when you go on a date?
Besides, this is the real me. Why would I pretend to be someone else if I’m on a date?
I always believe na its better to show the real you, romantic date or otherwise. So, I don’t put on masks or put on my best foot forward just for a guy.
Hahaha!
Maya: Your question required an extensive answer. Eh yun ang sagot ko. Kayo po ba iba kayo when you go on a date?
Richard: What do you mean?
Maya: I mean, are you still with all formalities with your date, or you loosen up? Baka naman you call your date by her full name or surname. Parang “Atty. Ramos, what would you like to have for starters, Ceasar Salad?” Hahaha!
Richard: Ha ha. Speaking of formalities, Maya may usapan tayo, you promised me. We’re in a public place? Po and opo?
Maya: Ay, onga po pala. Ay, Sorry Sir Chief!
Richard: Can you drop that please.
Maya: Ang alin p-, ang alin Sir Chief?
Richard took his phone out and dialled Maya’s number. Naturally, Maya’s phone began to ring.
Richard: Answer your phone.
Maya: Eh ikaw ito eh.
Richard: Just answer it.
Maya on the phone: Hello?Maya answers the phone while giggling and looking at Richard.
Richard on the phone: Richard begins his piece while smiling at Maya. Maya, can you please drop the Sir Chief? Look around, the place is small and people look at us with question all over their faces every time you refer to me as Sir Chief. Baka iniisip nila boss mo ako.
Maya on the phone: Eh hindi ba nga?
Richard on the phone: Oo nga. Pero they might be thinking that you’re my secretary and you are my other woman tapos Abby is our love child! Nakaka ilang, and I can’t enjoy my lunch. So please?
Maya on the phone: Okay! Bye!
At that moment, the waiter came with two orders of tacos and ice cream.
Maya: Wow! The tacos are here. Baby yung ice cream mo oh, tamang tama, naubos mo na yung spaghetti mo. Sir Chief try mo na yung ta –
Richard: Maya. Richard raised his eyebrows on Maya.
Maya: Fine! Richard sweetheart, i-try mo na yung tacos.
With a lopsided smile on the right, showing off his dimple, Richard looks at Maya with enjoyment and a heart with thundering beats. Maya calling her Richard would be pleasing to his ears but the sound of Maya’s voice saying Richard sweetheart was too much for him to take. It just feel so…so…so overwhelming he wants to reciprocate by calling her the same.
Maya: Tacos is fun Richard. You said you can be fun, right? Go on, try it.
With a little more coaxing from Maya and a smile on Abby’ s face, Richard tries the tacos. But as Richard raised the tacos to his mouth, the juice of the salsa oozed out and the vegetable fillings were falling off even before he could take a bite.
Richard: Maya, this is such a messy food to eat kaya ayoko kumain nito eh.
Maya: Tiger mode agad? There’s a trick on how to enjoy your tacos. Ganito yan.
Maya removed the plastic of the tacos as she placed it back on Richard’s plate. Using Richard’s fork, she mashed the tacos and mixed everything just like a salad. She then took some of the tacos using the fork as spoon and raised it to Richard’s mouth.
Maya: Ayan Sir Chief, i-try mo na.
Richard: Richard moved away. No. Maya, ikaw na lang kumain nyan. Kasi I’m really not a fan of Mexican food.
Maya: Ang corny mo. Sige na please i-try mo na.
Richard: No. I don’t like it.
Richard still does not open his mouth.
Haaay. Deliberately in a sweet pleading voice, Maya charmed Richard. Ricky honey, please try this. When Richard finally opened his mouth, Maya shoved the tacos inside.
Richard: Hmmm. This is actually good!
Maya: Good good ka ngayon? Haay Mr. Lim.
Abby giggled with delight watching Maya and her Dad. She taps Maya and motioned to give her some of the tacos.
Maya: Gusto mo ring i-try baby? Abby nods. Mabuti pa itong bata, madali kausap! Maya feeds Abby who gave her the thumbs up sign in approval. Sarap Baby diba?
She is such an amazing woman. Richard thought. He’s enjoying lunch he wants to spend the rest of the day with Maya and Abby. But just like a second nature, Richard glanced at his wrist watch to check on the time, and this did not escape Maya’s Bambi eyes.
Maya: Naku bilisan na natin kumain, Abby. May work pa si Daddy eh. Tayo babalik pa sa mansion at mag aabang kina Ate at Kuya.
Richard: No, it’s okay. I have lots of time. Besides, I’m having fun here, I’m actually enjoying lunch. So, go on, eat as you please.
Maya: Okay lang, we’re almost done here. Look outside, kumulimlim. Mukhang babagsak ang malakas na ulan. We need to go baka abutan kami ni Abby ng ulan sa daan.
Richard: Oh well, you’re right.
There was an old couple about to leave the restaurant. Upon passing by the table of Richard and Maya, the old woman can’t help but speak her mind out.
Old Woman: Hello there. We were watching and can’t help but admire your beautiful family. Your wife looks like an amazing woman, so caring and loving wife and mother to you and your daughter. You look so sweet and perfect together.
Maya: We’re n –
Richard: Yes ma’am, she is an exceptionally amazing woman.
Old Man: Well, you are such a lucky man like me. So, you better take care of her! Don’t ever let her go. I see my wife in her during our younger years, and look at us, still together after 45 years of marriage! Don’t lose the sweetness and the words of endearment. Keep the fire burning. The old man taps Richard’s shoulders as he prepares to exit.
Richard: Thank you Sir, I will. Good day to you.
Old Woman: Stay in love. The old woman taps Maya’s chin. Bye!
Maya: Take care Ma’am. Maya watched the old couple leave the restaurant. After waving goodbye at them, Maya returned her gaze at Richard. Mr. Richard Lim!
Richard: Hahahaha! What?!
Maya: Anung what? Other woman pala ha. Pinagkamalan naman akong wife mo.
Richard: Why, nakakahiya ba ako maging asawa?
Maya: Hindi naman sa ganun. Kaya lang –
Richard: What would you rather be mistaken as? Paramour or wife?
Maya: Shempre wife, pero you could have corrected the wrong impression.
Richard: What for? Maya, they’re strangers. They don’t know us, we don’t know them. Chances are, we wouldn’t see them again in this lifetime. If we explain and go into details, hahaba pa yung usapan. Besides, we don’t owe them any explanation and they looked so happy. So let them be. Ayaw mo nun, napasaya mo sila, just by thinking that we’re married and they see themselves in us?
Maya: Fine! Ang dami mo namang sinabi! Okay sweetheart, get the bill so we can go.
Richard: Sure my honey! Hahaha!
Maya: My what?! Sumakay pa talaga? Sir Chief OA na yan ha!
Richard: I was just having fun! See? I can be fun. Hahaha!
LAS Parking Area
Richard settled Abby at the back seat of Maya’s car while Maya put her bag on the passenger seat beside hers. Maya then stayed standing near the door and watched Richard buckle up the seat belt of Abby then finally kissed her on the cheek.
Richard: Abby, behave inside the car, and don’t remove your seat belt, okay?
Richard: Maya, I’m just saying. Richard closed the back door
after taking one last look at Abby who was waving at him with a full smile.
Anyway, thank you Maya for being so audacious and taking the chance to bring Abby to me just to make her happy even at the risk of infuriating me. You really made her so happy. And I had fun too.
Maya: Welcome!
Richard: Okay, I’ll see you later at home. Richard could not contain his emotions. He was in a state of bliss and contentment, so that unprecedentedly and without warning, Richard moved closer to Maya and sealed the gap between them and gave her a meso beso, one with a kiss planted on her cheeks.
Maya: ?! Maya gave Richard the question look.
Richard: What? I can’t give you a meso beso just like James? I’m also your friend right?
Maya: ?! Maya didn’t speak but just maintained her eye contact with Richard.
Richard: Okay, fine, I’m your boss. But uhm…iba naman tayo eh. Look, you’re not in your work place and technically, it’s not your working hours. So, right now, I’m not a boss, I’m just a friend, like James or Emman. So it should not be a big deal, right? It’s not like were breaking any rules or law.
Maya went inside the car and buckled up right away.
Don’t worry, I will let you know as soon as we reach home…safely. That is a promise Mr. Lim. Satisfied now?
Richard: Okay, Mrs. Lim! Ingat. With that statement, Richard swiftly turned his back and walked towards the building entrance, leaving Maya dumbfounded this time.
The rain outside was pouring when Luke and Nikki arrived late afternoon from school. Luke immediately went upstairs while Nikki went to the Study to find Maya.
Nikki: Oh my gee Tita Maya! First day was great! You know what, I enlisted myself sa theatre club auditions which starts tomorrow!
Maya: Hahaha! Kalma muna Nikki.
Nikki: Not yet. We just got here!
Dun tayo sa kitchen, I’ll make coffee.
Richard’s text: Okay, thanks. Still have a lot of work to do. Will just stay here until the rain stops.
Maya: So, you will audition for theatre club. What will be your piece? May theme ba or bahala ka?
Nikki: Actually, meron pong upcoming play ang theatre club, and yung auditions will not only be for making it to the theatre club, but it will also be for the play as well.
Yung story ng play is about a daughter who lost her mother to cancer, and her father was devastated, so she feels alone and she tries her best to reach out to her dad because he’s all she’s got blah blah blah.
Maya: So what do you plan to do?
Nikki: They suggest to sing kasi yung play would be a musical story telling type. So I plan to sing Home because I’ll be able to act by showing emotions while singing.
Maya: I have a better song in mind. Home is predictable. I’ll teach you later, we’ll just play with the words para akma sa story line ng play.
Nikki: Really? That would be great! Akyat muna ako Tita Maya ha. I’ll change lang.
Nikki: Truly Tita Maya. I’ll call Kuya and Abby na rin.
Early dinner was almost over when power went out after a strong thunder and lighting. Kids and Maya gathered in the living room while Doris opened the windows and the main door to let natural air in.
Maya: Naku, we don’t know how long this power outage will be. Ah, Doris, may off lotion si Abby dba?
While the kids were busy toying up with their gadgets, Maya was busy changing the words of the song in her mind.
Sabel: Opo Manang.
While everybody was busy, Maya was teaching Nikki the song that she will sing for auditions the next day.
Luke: Naman, nakaka inip na. Ang tagal naman ng brown out.
Maya: Ang bilis mo pala turuan Nikki eh. Gawan ko lang siya ng piesa para bukas, yun ibigay mo sa pianist when it’s your turn to audition.
Nikki: You can do that?
You said bawal, ayaw nya ng maingay.
Nikki: But he’s not here naman eh, hinaan na lang natin. And I need it for school. Justified.
Maya: Okay, sabi naman niya Maya feel at home, treat this like your home. O sige, bilisan na lang natin. May music paper ka Nikki?
Luke: Ako Tita Maya meron.
Maya painstakingly searched for the notes on the piano keyboards and hurriedly wrote them on the music sheet handed to her by Luke. By then, everybody else have gathered in the living room area, enjoying the cold air coming from the outside through the main door. Maya stood up and approached the main door to check if Richard is arriving anytime soon. Suddenly, the face of Joma appeared from nowhere.
Maya: Ay!
Maya: Okay! Sabihan mo ako agad pag nasa may gate na ha.
Joma: Yes Ma’am Maya.
Maya went back to the piano and played the song using the music piece she made as guide. Everybody watched and listened to her in awe.
Sabel: Wow! Parang Maya the bird talaga.
Maya: Kayo talaga. Sige na nga. Nikki let’s try it together? Iba kasi pag may piano ng kasama eh.
Nikki: Sure Tita Maya.
Maya: I’ll take the first then you follow. That is the challenge. Walang actions, facial expression at boses lang.
Nikki: Okay let’s do it.
Maya starts to play the piano and everybody, including Joma, watch in anticipation. Oblivious to them, Richard already arrived. The darkness of the night and the sound of the torrential rain outside made Richard’s entrance through the service gate unnoticed.
Richard hastily walked towards the main door but noted some activity inside the mansion. The dim light emanating from a candle on the coffee table and the faint sound of the piano caught Richard’s attention. He walked further, stopped by the window near the entrance and listened.
A chair is still a chair, even when there’s no one sitting there. But a chair is not a house, and a house is not a home ,when there’s no one there to hold you tight, and no one there you can kiss good night.
A room is still a room, even when there’s nothin’ there but gloom. But a room is not a hous,e and a house is not a home, when the two of us are far apart, and one of us has a broken heart.
Now and then, Dad I call your name, and suddenly your face appears. But it’s just a crazy thing. When in the end, I end in fear.
Daddy have a heart, don’t let the past keep us apart. I’m not meant to live alone, oh please turn this house into a home, when I climb the stairs and turn the key, oh please be there, please be there for me.
When I climb the stairs and turn the key, Daddy please be there, please be there for me.
Everybody kept still and let Maya finish playing the piano. Nikki was in tears, while all the rest released a sigh because they were swept away by Nikki’s beautiful rendition of the song.
Maya: Ang galing! Clap clap! Perfect Nikki.
Luke: With that performance, hindi ka lang pasok sa theatre club, sayo pa ibibigay ang lead role!
Maya: I agree!
Nikki: Awww Kuya, that is so sweet of you. Nadala lang ako ng kanta. Thankie everybody. Super thanks Tita Maya!
Doris: Tagos sa laman Ma’am Nikki. Dito sa puso oh.
Sabel: Bakit, naintindihan mo ba yung kanta?
Everybody’s attention shifted to Joma when he spoke. It was at the same time that Richard entered the mansion. As if on cue, the electric power was restored.
Doris/Sabel: Sir Richard!
Manang Fe/Maya: Ricardo!/Sir Chief!
