Truth and Lies – part 3

Chapter 3

She had no clothes on!

Maya was supposed to talk to her caller again when the phone went dead. It had lost its power.

She exclaimed in panic. “Oh my god, oh my god.”

She looked around as she wrapped herself with the sheet that was covering her when she woke up. She was teary eyed and felt her head ached due to hangover.

“How could this happen to me?” She repeatedly asked herself.

Still wrapped with the sheet, she stood up and check the first door that came into her sight. It was the bathroom. She tried another door but it wouldn’t open. The third door opened leading to a porch. From there, she could see the main road.

She was depressed when she returned and sat on the bed. Tears were about to fall from her eyes. This was the worst thing that happened in her life. She wanted to think it was just a nightmare but unfortunately, it was real after she pinched herself.

She studied the whole place. It was a like a small room or a studio type room. There was a small kitchen and a dining set in a corner area. There was a closet. When she opened it, it contained a few male clothes. The closet had a familiar scent of cologne. It was Richard’s. She was in Richard’s place. The last memory of the previous night slowly came to her mind.

Maya remembered they went back to the bar to retrieve her bag. When the bartender asked for their order, she actually ordered another drink. At that, she couldn’t recall what happened next.

She suddenly blushed on what could have possibly happened with her and Richard considering both of them were intoxicated with alcohol. She checked her body and convinced herself that nothing changed. However, waking up with her clothes on confused her. She thought of the worst and she began to get upset. She assumed that Richard may have taken advantage of her since she was drunk.

When the main door open and Richard came into view, Maya could help but react and get mad.

“Walanghiya ka!! Anong ginawa mo sa akin?” She was trembling as she shouted at him. She forgot that she had a head ache.

“Hannah..” Richard approached her but she threw a pillow at him.

“Wag kang lalapit, you are a rapist!” She accused him that caught Richard by surprise.

“Hey, wala akong ginawa sa ‘yo. Wag kang magbintang dahil hindi yan totoo.” Richard vehemently denied. He was a few steps away from Maya.

“Sinungaling! If you didn’t touch me, why am I….” Maya looked at herself and then shouted again. “Bakit ako walang damit? Di ba ang sabi mo ihahatid mo ako sa hotel ko? Bakit ako nandito sa…bahay ba ito , kwarto o lungga?”

By this time, Richard was obviously pissed. So, he countered. . “Excuse me, mukhang hindi mo naalala. Ang sabi mo ay sa Leonard Wood ka naka-stay. Hindi mo naman sinabi kung saan doon. Alam mo ba kung gaano kadaming inns and hotels sa loop na’yon?”

“Eh bakit hindi mo ako tinanong?” She replied.

“Paano kita tatanungin when you fell asleep as soon as you got into my pick-up?” He argued back.

“Oh come on, don’t give me that crap. Wag mo akong lokohin, you took advantage of me. I dedemanda kita ng kidnapping and rape.” Maya was holding her head as she felt her head ache again.

“Bah, ang galing mo rin ano? Ikaw na nga tinulungan kagabi, ikaw pa ang nagbabanta ngayon? Go ahead, sue me, kung may mapapatunayan ka. Para sa iyong memorya na pumapalya, Hannah, lumabas tayo ng bar na naglalakad ka at nakakapit pa sa braso ko. Marami pwedeng maging witness in my favor. Sinubukan kong ihatid ka sa hotel mo by asking the front desk people if they have a guest na Hannah, naka-tatlong hotel ako, walang Hannah doon. Alangang ubusin ko ang lahat ng hotel sa Baguio? Ni wala kang ID or credit card na dala so hindi ko alam ang full name mo. Yung cellphone mo may password.” Richard recanted all the efforts he did to bring her to her hotel. He’s had a bad night himself that he didn’t want to think about and then this reaction from her.

Somehow that pacified Maya especially after she heard him refer her as Hannah. How could find where she was staying considering she gave him a fake name. She didn’t even give him her last name. But the question was, how did she end up naked.

“Granted na wala kang choice but to bring me here. But why am I like this? Nasaan ang damit ko, at saka, yung iba pa?” She couldn’t even utter that her underwear was also gone.

Richard had a smug look after listening to her question. He sat on the chair from the dining table. In his thoughts. “this is going to be interesting.”

“Ikaw ba pag lasing, hindi mo alam ang ginagawa mo?” Richard gave her a meaningful stare which caused Maya to blush.

In her thoughts, “oh lord, don’t tell me ako ang naghubad ng damit ko at nakita nitong lalaking ito ang lahat sa akin.” She felt her heart thump. She couldn’t believe that their conversation was happening to her.

“Siempre, alam ko. At bakit ko naman huhubadin ang mga damit ko, aber?” She said instead of just admitting that she couldn’t remember anything. She could still feel her temples throbbing with pain.

“So, kung alam mo. Anong nangyari kagabi?”

“Ahh…ehh… natulog ako with my clothes on. Di ba ikaw na ang nagsabi na kaya mo ako dinala dito dahil tulog na tulog ako at ayaw kong gumising. So, malamang ikaw ang naghubad sa akin.” She defended herself.

“Yes, Dahil hindi ko alam kung saan ka dadalhin, uniuwi na lang kita dito. Pero siguro nag-sleep walk ka sa banyo kagabi at naligo ka sa banyo?” Richard folded his arms as he stretched lazily on the chair while he was staring at her shocked face.

“Excuse me, I didn’t do that.” She denied again but deep inside, she recalled that she had a dream of taking a bath because she felt hot last night.

“Ha,ha,ha. I suggest that in the future, wag ka ng masyadong uminom pag nasa bar ka kasi mukhang nagkaka memory lapse ka pag lasing.” Richard warned her.

“Kagabi, pumunta ka sa banyo, sabi mo CR ka lang. Then, nadinig ko na lang may bumagsak sa banyo. Akala ko may nangyari sa’yo, yung pala nahulog lang yung shower caddy. Since basang basa ka na nang tubig, there was no choice but to remove your clothes.”

“Ano? Ikaw ang nagtanggal ng damit ko? As in lahat?” Her voice started to rise again.

“Ahh, hindi naman. Pwedeng sabihing, tinulungan lang kita.” Richard was grinning.
“Naka takip ka naman ng tuwalya ng tanggalin mo ang damit mo. Then, bumalik ka na sa kama at natulog ulit.”

“I don’t believe that you didn’t look at my body!” She felt her face started to become warm with embarrassment.

“Assuming that I saw your body, I don’t think it was my fault. Besides, I’ve seen others before. I don’t think yours would be different. “ Richard responded with his eyes brows raised.

“Sheetzz, you are lying to me.” She was red all over her face and body.

“Eh ano naman ang mapala ko kung magsinungaling ako sa’yo?”

“Ewan ko sa’yo! Ang sama mo. Siguro minolestiya mo ako kagabi dahil wala ako sa sarili. Idedemanda kita.” She threatened him.

“Hannah, wala akong ginawa sa’yo, ha. For your information, I don’t take advantage of drunk women more so yung lasing na tulog na tulog. I want a fully participative woman when I have sex with her.” He was seriously looking at her.

Hearing him say that and with his eyes on her, she felt that even her fingertips and toes were already blushing. “Leche!!! Lumabas ka dito.”

Richard stood up and walked towards the door. “Which reminds, me I’m going to check if your clothes have dried. Ipapapasok ko na lang dito para makapagbihis ka.”

Before finally leaving her alone, he had one more reminder. “If you check the bathroom, may extra toiletries doon sa likod ng mirror na pwede mong magamit. Pagkatapos, lumabas ka sa main door, then turn right ka sa porch. Kumain tayo dyan sa canteen sa tabi.”

Minutes after Richard left, someone knocked on the door. Maya didn’t know whether she should open it considering her situation. Eventually, an elderly woman entered. She immediately recognize her as the lady who was selling vegetables and native products at Salcedo market.

“Ah, gising ka na nga sabi ni Ricardo.” The woman greeted her with a motherly tone.
“Eto na ang damit mo. Buti na lang maaraw ngayon. Sira pa kasi ang washing machine namin kaya ang paglalaba ngayon ay mano-mano muna.” She even smiled at Maya.

“Salamat po.” Maya shyly accepted the clothes that was handed to her.

“Ahh, ano po ang panggalan ninyo?” She asked before entering the bathroom to dress up.

“Ako si Fe. Pwede mo akong tawaging Manang Fe. Yan kasi ang tawag sa akin ni Ricardo.”

“Eh, ano po ninyo si Ricardo?” She curiously asked..

“Si Ricardo ay anak-anakan ko.” Manang Fe was smiling at Maya. She realized that the young lady didn’t understand what she meant, so she explained further. “Si Ricardo ay walang kamag-anak dito sa Baguio, kaya parang anak ko siya. O sige na, magbihis ka na at pagkatapos, pumunta ka na sa cantina sa labas para makakain ka na.”

Maya finally entered the bathroom to dress up. When she opened the small cabinet, the toiletries were there. She also found a packet of condom. . She cringed as stared at the condom. Then, she checked the trash can if a used one was there.
She heaved a sigh of relief when found it was empty.

While brushing her teeth, she was thinking what kid of a man was Richard. He seemed okay based on her interaction with him the previous night. He is definitely handsome and smelled so nice. However, her impression of him when she first saw him at Salcedo was different to man she encountered earlier. She found him untrustworthy.

~~*~~

She went out of his house with her small bag. Richard mentioned about having breakfast at the canteen. She thought that it would be the opportunity to talk to him properly. Even if she had an embarrassing experience the previous night, she couldn’t change the past anymore. No matter what she does, whatever happened already happened.

The moment she entered the canteen, she heard him call her. “Hannah, dito tayo.”

Maya approached him while looking around. Richard noticed that her eye brows was slightly raise. “Hindi ka ba kumakain sa ganitong lugar?” He waved at a waitress.

“Kuya ano po?” The waitress asked.

“Isa pang order ng arroz caldo, gusto ko yung pakpak ha.” Richard gave his order. “At tapos si Ma’m, paki tanong na lang ang gusto niya.”

“Kayo po Ate, anong gusto n’yo?” The waitress turned to Maya at the same time handing her the menu.

“Ahh, wala hindi ako gutom.” She hesitated. She wasn’t sure she order in a place that she is not familiar with. Most of the time, she only eats in restaurants except in the Saturday market that she frequents.

“Hannah, kumain ka. Masarap ang arroz caldo dito. Isa pa, magandang pang-alis ng hangover.” Richard winked at her.

Maya was about to respond but he beat her to it. “Bechay, isang arroz caldo na rin kay Ma’m. Yung leg part ang kanya, okay?”

“Okay po Kuya.” The waitress responded and then left them.

When they were alone, Maya spoke again. “Richard, hindi ako pumunta dito para kumain. Gusto ko ng bumalik sa hotel ko. Nasaan ba ‘tong lugar mo?”

“Nasa Bokawkan road tayo papuntang La Trinidad.” He responded as he sipped his coffee. “O, kape ka muna.” He offered a cup to her.

“Hindi ako nagkakape. Anyway, babalik na ako sa hotel ko.” She attempted to stand up but Richard grabbed her arm.

“Ooops. Don’t be so fast. Ihahatid na kita. Wala masyadong taxi sa labas, baka mahirapan kang sumakay. Unless, gusto mong mag jeep?”

She went mum. She hasn’t taken a jeepney ride before. So, she decided to sit down again. Her attention switched to the warm hand of Richard that held her.

“Good” Richard commented. “Kain muna tayo.”

~~*~~

Their food order soon arrived and they started eating. And Richard was right, the arroz caldo tasted good. After finishing the food, Richard stood up and invited Maya.

“Let’s go, magpapalit lang ako ng T-shirt at kukunin ko ang susi ng pick-up.” Richard said.

It was only then Maya noticed that he needed a change of shirt because he was wearing an old and slightly soiled shirt. She didn’t notice it earlier because she was upset with him.

“Eh, teka, hindi pa tayo nagbabayad.” Maya reminded him and attempted to open her bag.

“Ako ng bahala.” He uttered and then gave instruction to the waitress. “Bechay, lista mo na lang ha.”

In her thoughts, “Aba, may credit arrangement siya dito? Lista? Taga dito siya?” She became more curios on the man she just met the previous night.
