“BFF! BFF!! B-F-F!!!!” called out Doris as she ran excitedly towards the kitchen where Sabel was.

“O BFF!”

“Naku BFF!! May maganda akong balita sa’yo!! Naku dininig talaga ang panalangin natin!!” said Doris gleefully.

Sabel beamed up immediately. “Talaga BFF?? Asan na sila? Asan na sila dali BFF!! Ipakilala mo na sila sa akin ng masimulan ko ng kilatisin!!” she said giddily.

Doris’ face fell with anxiety. “Eh teka lang BFF. Isa lang kasi ang nahanap ko –“

“Isa lang??” Sabel interrupted.

Sabel scratched her head in frustration while Doris just looked at her with utter confusion. “Doris, alam kong BFFs tayo.

“Teka teka teka lang Sabel,” said Doris, as she raised her hands to stop Sabel. “Anong usapang pag-ibig? Anong lalaki? At anong pagsasaluhan? Ano bang mga pinagsasasabi mo diyan Sabel?”

“Eh di ano pa! Yung sagot sa panalangin natin! Ano pa nga ba!” answered Sabel proudly.

As what Sabel was trying to say Doris finally sank in, Doris was both amused and irritated at how her friend thinks. “Ah yung sagot sa panalangin natin.” She nods her head as she say so.

Sabel crossed her arms across her chest and pouted her lips.

Doris does not know whether to laugh at her friend’s assumption or slap her at the back of her head. But then an idea hit her. “Okay, ganito nalang BFF.

Sabel’s face immediately lit up. “Talaga BFF? Ipapaubaya mo nalang siya sa akin? Hindi ka na makikihati pa sa akin?”

Doris mustered all her strength to look convincing enough. “Oo naman Sabel. Mag-BFF tayo di ba? At ang mag-BFFs nagtutulungan hindi nag-dadamutan.”

Sable smiled at Doris but then eyed her suspiciously.

Doris chuckled at Sabel’s accusations.

“Aba BFF!

“Talaga BFF?? Duktor yan??” asked Sabel with utmost interest.

“Oo Sabel. Duktor siya.”

Sabel hesitated for another moment.

“Talaga BFF? Naku salamat talaga BFF ha. Ikaw na talaga ang best BFF in the world!” said Sabel and engulfed Doris in a hug.

“Palibhasa ngayon mo lang nalaman,” teased Doris.

“Ikaw naman!” Sabel said as they broke off. “Eh teka BFF, kelan ko ba makikilala yan ha?”

“Mamaya na BFF. Pupunta siya dito sa mansyon mamaya. Makikilala mo narin siya agad,” answered Doris.

Sabel’s eyes rounded in shock.

Gagayak na ako,” said Sabel and in a huff, turned around to leave.

As soon as Sabel was no longer in sight, Doris laughed her heart out.

“Doris!

“Manang Fe!” she blurted out but still could not contain her laughter. “Manang Fe!! Si- si- si Sabel kasi Manang!” she said in between her laughs.

She waited until Doris had finally contained her laughter.

Ayun tuloy. Nagkakanda-kumahog sa paliligo at pagpapaganda,” explained Doris.

Manang Fe smiled and shook her head in amusement. “Kayo talagang dalawa oo.”

Malapit na ba siya?” asked Sabel as she waits anxiously at the front door, together with Doris.

“Parating na daw eh,” she said then the doorbell rang.

Doris was about to turn around when Sabel held her arm and stopped her from her tracks.

“Teka lang BFF,” said Sabel.

Once again, Doris mustered all strength not to laugh at her friend. “Okay na okay na BFF. Maganda ka na at presentableng presentable.”

“Sigurado ka BFF ha?” Sabel asked bashfully.

Doris smiled reassuringly.

Doris proceeded to the gate and opened it. An elderly man in his mid sixties , wearing a white kamiso de chino, a worn out jeans and a pair of weathered sandals while carrying a bayong stood by the entrance.

“Magandang tanghali sa iyo ineng. Dito ba nakatira si Dorina Malasig?” asked the elderly man.

“Ay ako po yun!”

The elderly man beamed.

“Ah Mang Kanor!” Doris immediately took Mang Kanor’s right hand and pressed it onto her forehead as a sign of respect for the latter.

The elderly man was pleased by Doris’ gesture.

“Aba’y salamat ineng. Pagkabuti mo talagang bata ka,” complimented Mang Kanor.

As Doris ushered her through the driveway, Sabel was looking at them with disappointment and curiousity.

“Magandang tanghali po,” Sabel greeted as Mang Kanor and Doris reached her.

Kasamahan kop o dito,” introduced Doris then turned to Sabel.

Same with Doris, Sabel reached out for Mang Kanor’s right hand and pressed it onto her forehead.

“Aba’y kagalang mo rin palang bata! Ay kaawaan ka ng Diyos ineng,” said Mang Kanor in response to Sabel’s gesture.

“Salamat po.”

“Ah BFF.

Sabel’s face fell dramatically and turned pale in an instant with what she heard.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Sabel was sulking at the verandah while Mang Kanor was at the kitchen finishing his snack and Doris was in her room changing her clothes.

“Oi BFF! Anong ginagawa mo diyan? Aba BFF! Hindi magandang pag-uugali yan!” pointed out Doris.

“Tse!!” snobbed Sabel.

Doris laughed at her friend’s reaction.

Hmp!” said Sabel as she turned her back against Doris, fuming with anger for the prank that Doris pulled on her.

Doris still laughed at her friend despite it all. “Eh BFF naman kasi. Nakakatawa kang talaga.

“Tse!!” glared Sabel. “At pwede ba Doris, wag na wag mo nga akong matawag tawag na BFF. Wala akong BFF na mapanlinlang! Hmp!”

“Eh BFF naman –“

“Sinabi ng wag mo akong tawaging BFF!!” glowered Sabel.

“Ok fine. Hindi na kung hindi.”

Sabel once again had her back against Doris. A couple of seconds had passed but Sabel didn’t soften her stance not even for a bit. Seeing this, Doris bit her lip as guilt slowly rises up.

“Sabel. . .” Doris called softly but got no response from Sabel. She moved closer and touched Sabel’s shoulder. “Sabel. . .”

Sabel shook her shoulder to free it from Doris’ touch. “Wag mo akong kausapin at wag mo akong hawakan.”

Doris refused to easily give in. She already acknowledged deep inside her that what she did is wrong. “Sabel. Uy Sabel. Sorry na.” She tapping Sabel’s shoulder urging her to face her or even talk to her but the latter just kept refusing.

“I said don’t touch me and don’t talk to me.”

“Sabel. . . BFF. . . Sorry na o. Sorry na. BFF. . .” Doris persisted in calling Sabel and in asking for her forgiveness. After a while, Sabel finally softened up at her friend, turned to look at her and smiled.

“BFF sorry na talaga,” Doris said once more.

“Ikaw talaga! Pasalamat ka at BFF kita at hindi kita matiis,” said Sabel.

Doris smiled bashfully at what she heard. “So porgiven na ba ako? Bati na tayo?”

“Oo na! May magagawa pa ba ako.”

“Awww.” Doris moved and engulfed Sabel in a hug. “Sorry talaga BFF.” When they broke off, “eh ikaw naman kasi BFF.

“Oo kaya!”

“Hindi kaya!”

“Oo kaya!”

“Hindi kaya!”

They both went on until they finally stopped and laughed at their own  banters.

Richard kissed Maya’s forehead as he saw her waking up from her nap. He caressed her hair until her eyes fully opened up. “Hey. How are you feeling? Masama parin ba ang pakiramdam mo?” Richard asked Maya as he saw her wake up from her nap.

“Umm.. Okay naman na sweetheart. Medyo bumuti buti naman na.”

“That’s good,” he said and planted another kiss on his wife’s forehead. “You really got me worried you know that?”

Maya smiled sweetly at her husband.

Richard smiled and took her left hand and held it. “I know. But still, I can’t help but worry and think of possible reasons why this happened. And kahit yung doctor hindi ma-assure what could’ve caused all this. Who knows may nagawa pala tayo na naka-stress sa’yo or sa baby which triggered all these.”

“Sweetheart,” cajoled Maya. She held up her hand and touched Richard’s face.

“But sweetheart, if we won’t know what caused all these, hindi malayong mangyari ulit ito in the future. How can we possibly prevent this from happening if we don’t even know what to watch out for?”

“Sweetheart, I know you’re worried. Okay?”

Richard smiled and kissed her hand. “Okay sweetheart.”

Maya looked around and noticed that her mother is not around. “Nasaan si Nanay, sweetheart?”

“She just went outside to have some coffee.”

“Ah ganun ba. Gallero?” asked Maya.

“Well she actually texted me and sabi niya malapit na daw siya.

“Me too sweetheart,” smiled Richard. “Oh by the way sweetheart, do you want anything? Are you hungry? We have fruits, sandwich. Baka gusto mo munang kumain?”

Maya thought for a while. “Umm. Sweetheart, meron bang juice? Gusto ko kasi sana ng juice.”

Richard looked around but only found a bottle of water. “Err. Sweetheart wala kasi tayong juice eh. We only have a bottle of water here.”

“Ah ganun ba,” Maya said with slight disappointment.

“But I can go to the pantry to get you some. It won’t take me long.”

“Eh sweetheart wag na. Water nalang siguro ako. Maabala pa kita.”

Richard bent down once more and caressed Maya’s hair. He smiled at Maya and gave her a kiss. “I won’t be long okay?”

“Okay. Thank you sweetheart.”

Richard stood up and left the room. A couple of second later, the door opened once more.

Sabel!”

“Mrs. Chief!!” greeted the two in unison.

“Mrs.

Maya smiled at the concern shown by the two. “Doris, Sabel, okay lang kami ng baby. Walang masamang nangyari o mangyayari man sa amin. Safe na safe kami ni baby,” she said and saw the relief on her friends’ faces. Then she noticed the elderly man behind them. “Sino yang kasama niyo?”

“Ay!” exclaimed Doris. She then stepped aside and gave way to Mang Kanor. “Mrs.

Maya smiled at Mang Kanor. “Ah magandang hapon po Mang Kanor.”

Mang Kanor smiled back at Maya. “Magandang hapon din naman sa’yo ineng.”

“Ah Mang Kanor, siya po yung amo namin na sinabi po namin sa iyo,” said Doris to Mang Kanor.

“Ganoon ba?” Mang Kanor said and immediately went to Maya’s side to check on her.

Maya immediately fell uneasy as Mang Kanor, seemed to be scrutinizing every inch of her face and her arms. “Ah ano pong ginagawa niyo? Doris Sabel anong ibig sabihin nito?”

He then turned to Doris and Sabel,” Kailangan ko ng batya na may tubig. Madali kayo.”

The two scurried around to look for a basin. They found one at the bathroom and filled it with water. They then handed it over to Mang Kanor. Mang Kanor in return put it on top of the table. He took out a white candle and a box of matchstick from his bayong.

Maya already had an inkling with what kind of a healer Mang Kanor was and what he was already about to do. She immediately got worried about what the healer was about to do and was even more worried about Richard’s reaction when he finds out what’s been happening inside the room. She tried to stop Mang Kanor to even start his incantation but the latter is adamant to heal her.

“Wag kang mag-alala ineng.

“Wag kang mag-alala Mrs. Chief.

“Wag kang mag-alala Mrs. Chief.

Maya was about to speak up some more when she heard Mang Kanor’s incantation. Not wanting to be impolite, she held her tongue as she watched Mang Kanor hold the lighted candle in the middle of the basin, letting the melted wax drop, all the while saying words that she could not decipher.

After a couple of minutes, Mang Kanor spoke up. “May nakikita ako!”

“Ano po yun Mang Kanor? Ano pong nakikita niyo?” asked Doris curiously.

“Isang kweba. May nakikita akong kweba!” declared Mang Kanor.

“Yung kweba sa Cagayan!” Doris and Sabel blurted out in unison.

“May babae. Nasa loob siya ng nasabing kweba. May kasama siya. Isang. . . May kasama siyang lalaki!”

“Yung mga nahuli natin sa kweba!!” Doris and Sabel once again blurted out.

Maya on the other hand was already feeling uneasy with everything that she’s hearing from the healer. She doesn’t know how the healer knew about such things, but one thing’s for sure, she’s not liking where his discovery is leading to.

“Nakahubad silang pareho at may ginagawang. . .

Maya felt her face fully heating up.

Mang Kanor looked intently at the contents of the basin, examining it carefully. “Oo.

Doris and Sabel tried to picture out what the healer was trying to say. “Eh Mang Kanor, yung sinasabi niyong babae at lalaki –“ started Sabel but she was cut off.

“Sandali lamang. Katahimikan muna. May nakikita ako. Ah, nakikita ko yung lalaki. Maputi siya. . . matangkad at matipuno ang pangangatawan. . .”

“BFF,” whispered Doris. “Maputi ba yung lalaking nakita natin?”

“Aha!” exclaimed Mang Kanor which startled Doris, Sabel, and Maya, all the same time.

“Bakit po Mang Kanor? Ano po ang nangyayari? Ano po ang nakikita niyo?” asked Doris.

“Yung lalaki,” he said.

Maya’s eyes widened at what she’s hearing. She’s been silently praying for something to happen or someone to enter the room. Anything or anyone that would stop Mang Kanor from blurting out anything that would put her and her husband on the spot.

Ano pong nakikita niyo?” asked Sabel, eagerly waiting for what Mang Kanor would blurt out next.

“Ang mga mata niya. Ang mga mata niya ay sing –“

“What’s happening here? What’s the meaning of this??”

Maya, together with Sabel, Doris, and Mang Kanor turned their heads toward the door only to find Richard, Nanay Teresita and Dra. Gallero standing by the doorway with questioning looks on their faces.

“Sweetheart!” called Maya. She was obviously relieved at the sight of her husband and his two company.

Richard immediately rushed to her side and held her hand. “Are you okay? Is everything alright?”

“Oo sweetheart okay lang ako,” she said but could not contain the relief that she’s feeling.

Richard’s brows remained furrowed as he noticed how Maya’s face seemed flushed. “Are you sure? You look a bit pale?” He touched her forehead to gauge her temperature.

“Doc?” Richard called the doctor for help.

Dra. Gallero immediately rushed to Maya’s side and checked her. “She doesn’t have a fever or anything. Her temperature’s normal.” She took her stethoscope and checked her heartbeat. “Her heartbeat’s normal.” The doctor stood up straight and faced Richard. “So far I don’t see anything wrong with Maya. I checked the work-up done on her and all the results are normal, nothing out of the usual. The results indicated that Maya is perfectly healthy and though this may mean that the baby is perfectly healthy as well, I’d still recommend that we do an ultrasound para makasiguro tayong perfectly okay talaga ang baby.”

“Okay po doc. Do whatever needs to be done,” said Richard.

Dra. Gallero smiled at the couple. “Alright. I’ll just prepare the ultrasound room and have a nurse fetch you once everything’s ready.”

“Okay doc. Thanks.”

Dra. Gallero turned and left the room. As soon as she got out of the room Mang Kanor spoke up once again.

“Patay!” Doris & Sabel uttered at the same time. They were already tensed when Richard entered the room unnoticed and now, with how Mang Kanor expressed his views, they’re already trembling as they wait for their boss’ reaction.

Isa akong manggagamot. Hindi ako kakilala ng iyong asawa pero kaibigan ako ng nanay nireng si Dorina,” said Mang Kanor as she pointed to Doris who all the more became uneasy.

“Naku Mang Kanor! Doris thought as she struggled to smile at Richard.

All the while, Teresita simply stood at one side of the room and chose to observe everyone inside, from Doris and Sabel’s uneasiness to Richard’s curiousity on who Mang Kanor really was. Seeing what Mang Kanor has been holding and the basin he had placed on the table, already guessed what Mang Kanor is and what’s been happening.

Richard asked further.

“Naparito ako upang gamutin ang asawa mo.”

“Excuse me?” Richard asked as he finds it incredulous.

“Huwag kang mag-alala amang.

Richard asked in disbelief.

Sabel and Doris noticed how Richard’s brows furrowed even more. They can sense his temper rising and worry that it may snap any time.

Kailangan nilang malaman kung ano ang nakita ko at ano ang naging sanhi ng pagkakasakit ng asawa niya,” said Mang Kanor with a firm resolve to expose what he saw.

“Patay ng talaga!” muttered Doris softly.

“Ano ng gagawin natin Doris?”

“Hindi ko rin alam Sabel.”

Unknown to the two, they’re not the only ones who’s not comfortable with Mang Kanor’s exposes.

Gallero sa ultrasound room?” asked Maya as she tried to find a way to escape Mang Kanor.

“Ok sweetheart sige, punta na tayo doon.”

Richard was trying to help his wife get up when Mang Kanor spoke up once again.

“Sandali lamang. Bago kayo umalis. May sasabihin muna ako.

“Excuse me??”

“What??” Richard paused for a while to calm his nerves down before he totally lose his temper.

Maya got out of bed and gathered all her strength to stand up to her feet. Richard immediately placed his hands around her to help her up.

“Ngunit ineng –“

Mang Kanor was interrupted by the knocks heard. As the door opened, a nurse with a wheelchair in tow emerged.

“Mr. Lim, pinapasabi po ni Dra. Gallero na okay na po yung ultrasound,” the nurse said.

“Okay thank you,” Richard acknowledged.

The nurse pushed the wheelchair to Richard and they helped Maya on it.

As they were about to leave the room, Richard turned to Sabel and Doris. “Doris, Sabel. Intayin niyo nalang kami doon. I need to talk to the both of you.”

“Okay po sir,” the two answered in unison.

As the door closed, Doris and Sabel were both on the verge of crying as they nervously anticipate Richard’s wrath waiting to be poured out on the both of them.
