Chapter 5 – Gallant

Dinner was casual.  They went to a restaurant at Clark Quay famous for their Chili crab.  The place was swarming with tourist, and it took them awhile to get a seat.  After a long wait at the queue, they were shown to an unoccupied seat outside overlooking a river, and a sight of colorful lights.

As Richard pulled out her chair, Maya glanced around at her surroundings, and the customers – there’s certainly a mix of people here – most of them were wearing casual clothes from shorts to slacks, shirts, so she’s in good company.

A waiter appeared at their table, and handed them a huge leather bound menus.  They browse through it, and decided on Chili Crab, steamed buns, steamed fish, and vegetables.

A comfortable silence blanketed them as they waited for their order.  Looking back at their activities since morning, Maya smiled at the thought that this is actually her first outing with a man. Though it can’t be called a date, she enjoyed every minute of it especially with a charming companion.  A perfect company, who kept glancing at her.

“When is your flight back to Manila?”  Richard asked.

“Tomorrow evening. How about you?”

“I still have some business to do here, so I’ll probably stay for another three weeks.  Why don’t you stay for a couple of days more, and accompany me?” Richard ventured looking at her in a serious expression.

Maya gathered her wits at his invitation, and replied in a somewhat cool, and unaffected manner, “I wish I could stay longer, but I couldn’t.  I’m back to reality tomorrow, back to work.”

“Is there a special someone waiting for you in Manila?”

“None that I know of. Why?”

“Nothing.” Richard secretly smiles.

~*~

“Tell me, Richard. What do you do for a living?” Maya inquired casually while sipping her tea.  She tried to pick up the conversation with him where it had been interrupted before the food they ordered came in.

Richard clenched his jaw, and thought about on how much he should tell her.  He was enjoying this animosity with her, and doesn’t want her to connect him to the person she met a year ago in a flight from Tokyo, and to the name ‘Richard Lim, the President and owner of Lim Aviation’.

“Was that a tough question?”  Maya joked.

He inclined his head in a slow nod, a hint of smile lingering in his eyes, but he remained frustratingly silent.  He simply looked at her, and gave her a dimpled smile that did crazy things to her heartbeat.  She must be crazy to be drawn to this man – a complete stranger who had spared his time to accompany her.

“Did you know that you’re a very relaxing company?” He asked softly.

“Thank you, and I think I know what you’re trying to do?”  Maya replied, and smiled, understanding his deliberate evasiveness. “Alright, let’s not talk about personal matter.”

Maya noticed that he was extremely evasive when it came to actually talking about himself, but positively insatiable when it comes into probing about herself.  All she learned about him is that he’s in Singapore for work, and will be leaving for Manila in three weeks’ time.

~*~

“Where are you staying?”  Richard asked casually while paying for their dinner.

“Crowne Plaza Hotel in Changi. Why?”

“I’ll accompany you to your hotel.”  Richard informed her in a tone not subject for any arguments.

Maya looked at him as if he’d grown horns. “Richard, huwag na. You’ve already done so much for me today.”

“I insist. It will give my mind rest to know that you’re safely back to your hotel.” Richard cut off her words before she could say anything. The truth is he wanted to prolong this day with her if possible, intrigued and drawn by her persona.

“If it’s not an inconvenience to you.” Maya responded to him after a few minutes of hesitation. A little more time with him won’t hurt, she thought.  In fact, she welcomed it for she really enjoyed his company.  If only, she can meet him again after today, then she wouldn’t have to grasp whatever little time they have left.  She was tempted to ask him of his contact no. in Manila, but that would be too forward of her.  He could be a married man for all she knows, but there wasn’t any ring on his finger, which made her feel better.

“Not an inconvenience at all.” He interrupted her thoughts as he took her hand, and placed it at the crook of his arms as they went out of the restaurant, and walked towards the taxi stand.

~*~

Richard opened the cab door for Maya as she slid into the backseat.  He followed her inside giving the driver the location of their destination before seating comfortably beside her.

Before they can even fasten their seatbelt, the driver floored the car, and sent it angling across the street, and shooting into the three-lane traffic.  Maya gasped, and grabbed Richard’s knee for balance, while Richard curved his arm around Maya’s shoulder to hold her against him.

Richard looked at Maya’s hand resting unconsciously on his knee, and realized that her instinct trusted him even if she’s not aware of it.

When the cab was already in the highway, and the speed became steady, Maya started to remove her hand on his knee, but Richard was quick to respond without looking at her.  He covered her hand with his own; then twined his fingers with hers and held it on his thigh. The gesture startled Maya as she looked down at the masculine hand engulfing hers with a treacherous feeling of safety that came with the warm handclasp.

After a few minutes of silence, a jolt streaked up Maya’s spine as his thumb slowly drew circles on her palm, and brushed his thumb over the delicate veins of her wrist. She caught her breath, her heart swelling as she focused at the beautiful male hand, watching his finger feathered along the tender flesh of her palm while her body seemed to melt from the touch.

He was giving her mixed signals.  She tried to look perfectly casual, while the simple touch of a finger on her palm made her pulse continue to escalate. When the movement finally stopped, her pulse slowed to normal.  She felt foolish to be susceptible to what was probably an idle touch on his part.

Partly out of curiosity, she experimented, and fiddled lazily with his hand, moving her thumb inside his palm in a subtle exploration. She glanced at him to see if there’s a noticeable effect on him, but he seemed to have dozed off leaning on the seat with his eyes close. Since he seemed not to object, she continued to what she was doing marveling at the contrast of his masculine hand with hers.

Richard gave up all pretense of trying not to be affected by what she’s doing, and opened his eyes looking at her bent head.  He gazed at her as desire flowed throughout his entire nerve system while she delicately moved her fingers unto his sensitized palm.  His heart was beating in a heavy tempo as his mind flew with lewd thoughts of her, of letting go of his baser instinct. It was torture having to sit still, aroused as if he’d been indulging in an intense sexual foreplay instead of merely holding her hand.

Maya pulled her gaze from their clasp hands and looked up at him, and saw that he’s awake. He was studying her very closely. “What are you thinking about?” He murmured, his eyes ablaze with unspoken emotions.

“Chicken feet. Siomai. Chili crab. And our taxi driver who thinks he’s in an F1 race.” She jokingly enumerated; then shook her head, negating the flippant answer, and quietly told him the truth in a serious tone. “I was thinking about you, that is… with a not so wholesome thoughts.”

Richard drew a ragged deep breath, and closed his eyes as he kept his silence. His handclasp tightened.

Blissfully unaware of the new, dangerous ground she was treading, Maya leaned on the seat, letting her hand be clasped as if it’s just a normal thing to do.

~*~

“Thank you Richard.  This day wouldn’t be as productive and enjoyable without you.  I’m really glad to have met you.” Maya said when they arrived at her hotel.

“You’re welcome.”

“Should we have our photo taken?” Maya cheerfully suggested.

Richard was taken aback by her suggestion, and looked at her in bewilderment.  “Are you serious? I’ll pass. I’m not really that photogenic.”

“Don’t worry.  I don’t plan to put this in a rat hole.  Di ren kita ipapakulam.  Sige na, it’s something to remember you by – how one gallant person spared his time for me today.”  Maya linked her arm to his, and made making sure that he won’t bolt.  She quickly called the guy in the reception to take their photo using her cell phone.

Richard smiled and gazed at her tenderly. If the eyes are the windows to one’s soul, then he can see himself clearly reflected in hers, and saw himself gallant in her eyes.

[Flash]

Richard blinked, and realized that the photo was already taken.

Maya thanked the guy who took their photo, and reached for her cell phone without bothering to look at the photo.

She turned to Richard, and stared at his profile – he’s unbelievably good looking, and he can’t seem to take his eyes off her.  Her attraction to him doubled that she actually have to concentrate on breathing evenly when he looked at her in what seems to be a borderline inappropriate.

“Goodbye, Richard.”  Maya said and tried to ignore how he looked at her as she reached out to give him a quick hug.  After today, she won’t be seeing him, she thought, as she hesitatingly turned her face to give him a peck on his cheeks.

“Goodnight, Maya.”  Richard said as he held her tightly a little bit longer.  He buried his face on her hair, savoring her scent and placed a lingering kiss on the side of her neck. He was sorely tempted to do more than that, but not today.  Some other time, he thought, as he reluctantly release her and saw her blushed profusely.

CHAPTER 9

Maya surprisingly slept well last night. She quickly took a bath and headed downstairs to cook. Her phobia has settled down a bit. She doesn’t freeze that much whenever she saw a window or a door closed.

It’s all in your mind, Maya. It’s all in your mind.

She cooked breakfast for the whole family even though they are still asleep. She’s too excited today. She felt much better after last night’s sleep. It’s like her phobia disappeared overnight. She wants to tell Richard what had happened after their fight but went she sat down on the table; she realized that she’s alone. No Richard, no guardian angel, no one to talk to. She’s alone.

The ride to Manila was fine and all but she was bored to death. For the first few minutes, she was still uncomfortable but then Richard’s face went inside her mind. She became calmer when she saw his face, even if it’s just in her mind. She’s been missing him terribly. It’s like her day is not complete if she didn’t see him. She got used to talking to her angel whenever they are on the road and that would keep her from the feeling of boredom.

Nasan na nga kaya si Richard? Bumalik na kaya siya sa heaven?

Maya felt guilt. Their last conversation was the last memory she wanted him to have. And yet, he’s finally out of sight.

..

“Good morning po, Sir Robert.” She said nervously when she stepped inside Roberto’s office. She’s scared again, now that she knows that Richard is not with her anymore, Roberto might be back to his usual self.

“Good morning Hija.” He smiled. Maya was shocked to see Roberto unchanged. Thank you Richard. “Have a seat. Nagawa mo ba yung pinapagawa ko?”

“Ah, opo. Eto na po.”

Maya gave Roberto the report she’d been doing during the weekend. With Richard.

Roberto smiled as he reached the end of the report. “You did well, Maya. As expected.”

“Thank you po.”

Roberto stared at her for awhile. “Ba-bakit po? May dumi po ba ako sa mukha?” Maya consciously asked.

He shook his head. “No. It’s just that, you remind me so much of my son. Kung nandito siya ngayon, siguro natuwa na rin yun sa’yo.”

“Salamat po.” Maya said but she saw the pain in Roberto’s eyes. “Eh Sir, pwede po bang magtanong?”

“Sure. “

“Eh personal po eh.”

“It’s about my son, isn’t it?”

Maya could only nod. Roberto gave her a weak smile and sighed. “My wife had difficulties during pregnancy. Laging naaagasan si Esmeralda. I still remember that there was this time where we almost gave up. But I told her not to. So we prayed and prayed and prayed. That was when our son Richard came.”

Maya’s attention was caught when her angel’s name was mentioned. “Richard po ang pangalan ng anak niyo?”

“Yes. Ang gusto ni Esmeralda, isunod daw sa pangalan ko kasi ako raw ang nagbigay sa kanya ng pag-asa noon. She also wanted our son to give hope to others, when the time comes. Si Ricky lang ang naging anak namin kaya binigay namin lahat sa kanya. Sa awa naman ng Diyos, maayos naming napalaki yung bata. Ibibigay ko na nga ‘tong kompanyang ‘to sa kanya kaso .. kaso naaksidente siya.”

Roberto paused for a bit. “He’s going to have a site visit in Clark. He decided to ride our helicopter. Then the most unfaithful thing happened. Nawalan ng control yung piloto ng helicopter. Nabangga sila sa isang mountain range.”

Tears are forming in her eyes. And she could also see that Roberto is trying to hold back his tears. “For weeks, wala kaming balita sa kanya. We thought na nakarating siya ng maayos sa Clark then we saw the news.We all thought na wala na si Ricky. But God created a miracle. He’s still alive.”

“Bu-buhay pa po si Richard?”

“Yes hija. He’s admitted in a hospital. Almost a year na pero hindi pa rin siya nagigising. He’s on comatose. Gusto na ngang mag-give up ng mga doktor sa kanya pero ayaw namin ni Esme. He’s our only hope. Kaya I’m sorry hija kung lagi kitang napag-iinitan ng ulo ha? May pinagdadaanan lang kami.“

Maya could only nod. “I’m sorry, Maya. It’s just that I blame myself. I should’ve told him to take his car instead of riding that helicopter. Edi sana, he’s still with us. Sana .. sana ..”

Roberto could not contain it anymore. Tears fell from his eyes. Maya quickly stood up to comfort the old man. She might not know this man personally but she could feel that Roberto truly loves his son.

“Sir, tahan na po, hindi niyo po kasalanan.”

“How can you say that, hija?”
“Eh kasi po nandito po si Sir Richard alam ko pong sasabihin din niya yun. Saka malulungkot po yun kapag nakita kayong naiyak.”

Roberto gave a soft chuckle. “You’re right.” And he wiped his tears. “Pasensya na sa abala, hija. I think you still got work to do.”
“Okay na po ba kayo?”

“I would be lying if I said yes. Sige na. Ah, Maya. Please tell no one about the things I’ve told you. I trust you.”

“Oo naman po, makakaasa po kayo.”

Maya was almost outside when Roberto called her again. “Maya.”

“Yes po Sir?”

“Do .. do you mind if you go to dinner with me and my wife? I’ve told her about you and she really wants to meet you.”

“Uhm, sige po Sir. Kailan po ba?”

“Are you free this evening? I could ask Joma to pick you up.”

“Sige po Sir.”

..

Maya is currently putting on her make-up. She’s wearing a blue blouse and white pants. Roberto told her that the dinner will be just at their house and there’s really no need for formal clothes. Maya didn’t know what got into her. She just said yes to Roberto’s offer while a part of her doesn’t want to. Maybe, just maybe, it’s fate that I obliged.

A sleek black BMW was waiting outside when she went down. A man was waiting and looked at her when he saw her.

“Ma’am Maya?” the man said.

“Uhm, Maya na lang po. Kayo po si Kuya Joma di ba po?”

The man nodded, then opened the car’s door. “Tara na po. Naghihintay na po si Don Roberto.”

Maya nodded and entered the car. Goodluck sa napasukan mo Maya.

The travel to Roberto’s house was quiet, as usual. She really misses Richard. It might have been just a few days since he was gone but she misses him terribly. She started to notice the closed surroundings and she’s starting to panic so she broke the silence.

“Ku-kuya Joma. Ki-kilala mo ba yung anak nina Sir Robert?” she stammered.

Joma looked at her through the mirror. “Ah, opo. Si Sir Richard.”

“Ah, na-naikwento kasi sa’kin ni Sir Robert. Eh na-naaksidente daw?”  Gahh, Maya, calm down. Everything’s fine. You don’t have to stammer! Her phobia is eating her again.

“Opo. Isang taon na po atang nasa ospital.”

“A-anong i-itsura niya?” What? Seriously Maya? But she had no choice but to ask the first question that pops from her mind. I just have to get rid of this phobia. I just need someone to talk to.

“Uhm. Matangkad, maputi saka singkit. Chinese kasi Ma’am. Di’ba Lim po ang apelyido nila?”

“Richard Lim.” She whispered. Somehow, the name sounds perfect.

“Nakilala niyo ba siya Ma’am?”

“Ay, hindi po Kuya Joma. Si Sir Robert na ‘yung naabutan ko dun sa LAS.”

“Ahh. Eh di parang nakilala niyo na rin siya Ma’am. Eh kasi halos pareho lang sila ng ugali ni Don Roberto eh. Pero simula nung naaksidente si Sir Richard, matamlay na lagi yung mag-asawa.”

She suddenly remembered her angel. Having the same name as the son of his boss, she couldn’t help not to think that her Richard might be the same Richard.

Masungit? Nah.

She also remembered what it like was to be in his arms.

The voice of Joma brought her back from her reverie. The car entered this huge house. She was amazed on how the house was built. It’s simply beautiful.

Roberto was waiting for her at the front door. He welcomed her with a hug when she got out from the car.

“Thank you for coming, Maya.”
Maya could only return a nod and a smile.

“Let’s go inside? My wife is waiting.”

Maya was even more amazed on the interior of the house. It’s well furnished and well kept. She saw a woman inside who was looking at some picture frames. She turned when she heard their footsteps and smiled at Maya when she saw her.

“Esmeralda, this is Maya dela Rosa. She’s the woman I was talking about.”
“Magandang gabi po.” Maya greeted.

Esmeralda engulfed her in a hug. “Hello hija. I’m glad that I finally met you.”

“Ako rin po Ma’am.”

“Call me Tita, hija. Ito naman, masyadong formal.”

Maya gave her a smile. Then her gaze turned to the picture frames Esmeralda was looking at earlier. Maya was astonished at what she saw.

“Have you met him hija? I know it’s just a picture but that’s our son.”

She came closer just to look at that portrait. She needs to be sure. She has to be sure. The two elders followed her, curious by Maya’s action.

Maya carefully grabbed the picture when she’s near to where it is. Tears sprung from her eyes. She recognized that face, that hair, those chinky eyes and that smile that always makes her heart stop.

“He’s our son Maya. Si Richard Lim.”

Maya doesn’t need to hear his name just to know who he is. She’s sure that the man in the picture is her angel. It is her guardian angel. He’s her Richard.

Chapter 8

While on the plane bound for San Nicolas for the Christmas holidays, the two were busy whispering sweet nothings to each other.

“So, who do you think we should tell first? Will it be my mom or your mom?” Richard asked.

“Ha?” Suddenly, Maya felt nervous. She doesn’t know how her mother will react. The boyfriend discussion in their home has always been a joke so she can only second guess the reaction of her mother.

“Bakit, kailangan na bang sabihin?” She asked, seemingly suggesting they delay the announcement to their family.

“At bakit, wala kang balak? Ms. Dela Rosa, I don’t agree to that. If you’re my girlfriend, you have to be properly introduced to my parents.” Richard pointed out.

“Teka, girlfriend na nga ba?” She started to question him. “Come to think of it, nanligaw ka ba? Parang wala akong natatandaan, ah. Di bang nung isang araw friend lang tayo?” She was teasing him.

“Rigthly said! You didn’t give me a chance to properly court you.” Richard laughed. He signaled her to keep her voice down.

“Ah gano’n? Madali naman akong kausap. Sige, bigyan kita ng chance. Manligaw ka muna at pag-iisipan ko kung sasagutin kita.” She pouted.

“Ha,ha,ha. Nope that’s not unacceptable, Babe. The moment you kissed me, you forfeited the right.” He whispered; His eyes turning more chinito when he smiled at her.

Her face suddenly turned serious that prompted him to ask “What?” He worried that the teasing may have gone out of hand.

“Wala. Hmmm so Babe ang tawag mo sa akin?” She asked sweetly.

“Ikaw, anong gusto mo? Sweetie pie, sweetheart, baby, love, darling?” All the options he gave her made her cringe.

“Yikes. Sige, pwede na rin. Babe” She accepted the term of endearment as she held his hand tightly.

“Anyway, Babe, let me handle the announcement to our family. You don’t have to worry.” Richard’s assurance made Maya relax.

~*~

The following day, the Lim and Dela Rosa family saw each other at the San Nicolas church to attend the traditional Simbang Gabi. They chose to seat in the same pew. Richard and Maya sat in the middle; in between their respective families.

During the sign of peace part, they kissed their respective mothers. After that, Richard and Maya kissed each other on the cheek. Both mothers was slightly surprised, it was the first time they’ve seen the two seemingly becoming close.

Then, Richard made a sudden declaration to his mother while Maya was giving respects to her. “Ma, si Maya ang girlfriend ko.” He whispered then made a sign of peace to his mom.

Mama Esme momentarily had a confused smile on her face. Then, her facial expression changed eventually to joy and excitement. But she tried to control her reaction in as much as they were still inside the church. But she managed to say, “Hija, Am so glad. I am so glad. Finally, ang pangarap ko, welcome to our family Hija.” She reached for Maya and hugged her. Her friend, Mama Teresita, just looked on wondering what her friend meant.

During family breakfast at the request of Mama Esme, it was Mama Teresita’s turn to be informed.

“Hmmm. Tita” Richard started the conversation after he asked if he could talk to her privately.

“Yes, Richard, ano ‘yun anak.” Mama Teresita waited in anticipation. He never attempted to talk to her privately in the past.

“Ahh… Hindi ko po pahahabain ang sasabin ko. I know po na hindi pa kayo nakakapag-usap ni Maya about her having a boyfriend. Gusto lang pong sabihin sa inyo na malinis po ang intens’yon ko sa anak n’yo.” Richard started his prepared speech.

As Mama Teresita listened to him, she thought that Richard was asking her permission to court her daughter. She appreciated the respect Richard was giving to her and Maya. He looked nervous as he was speaking to her. So, she made it easier for him.

“Salamat Richard sa pagsasabi mo. Okay lang naman sa akin na ligawan mo si Maya. Matagal ng magkaibigan ang pamilya natin so wala akong tutol.” She gave him her assurance.

“Thank you po, Tita” Richard caught on that she assumed that he is still courting Maya. So, he continued to correct her understanding, “Ah Tita, actually po, girlfriend ko na si Maya. Ako na pong nagsasabi sa inyo to assure you that I love your daughter very much. Sana po, ‘wag n’yong kagalitan si Maya. ” He looked so sincere as he said those words.
Mama Teresita was shocked. She kept quiet and just stared at him. In her mind, she couldn’t discount the courage of the young man in front of her.

In the end, she just shrugged her shoulder and said, “So, okay na pala kayo ng anak ko. Ito talagang si Maya malihim. Ano pa ba ang magagawa ko.” She smiled “Basta, wag mong paiyakin ang anak ko ha?”

Richard was about to reply when they heard an exclaiming Cristina Rose on the other side of the room.

“Anooo? Paanong nangyari bunso?” Kute’s words were heard by everyone. Maya had just told her about her and Richard.

“Kute, ano ka ba. Nanligaw and then sinagot ko.” Maya said skipping details.

Kute could only murmur “Itong Richard na’to ang bilis pala. Last month ko lang binigyan ng tip, may action and result agad.” She could only shake her head.

The Christmas vacation at San Nicolas was one of the happiest in Maya’s life as their families celebrated it together.

~*~

It was mid-January when Richard received a letter from Stanford University in the U.S. After months of waiting, he finally received an official communication from the graduate school. He applied in their masters in engineering scholarship program and that day he received the confirmation that he got accepted.

He immediately called his mother to inform her of the good news. His celebratory mood was suddenly cut when his mom asked.
“So ano anak, nasabi mo na ba kay Maya? Does she know that you’ll be going to the states?”

“Ma, hindi pa. I wasn’t sure if I’d get it so I didn’t tell her. But now I have no choice, she will have to know.”

“Good luck anak, I know how important this is to you. Going for your dream is not bad, you’ve worked hard for that. Maya will understand, I’m sure”. Mama Esme’s words of encouragement lifted her son’s mood.

Richard’s was not surprised on Maya’s reaction when he told her personally the news.

“Ano? Ibig sabihin you’ll be away? Gaano katagal? Hindi ba pwede ‘yan dito sa Philippines na lang?” The questions came out one after the other. Richard just waited for her to stop before responding.

“Maya, it will just be three years. With the technology these days, we can still connect with each other as often as we want to. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you earlier because I wasn’t sure I would be granted the scholarship so I didn’t want to make you worry. This school is one of the best in U.S., I’ve dreamt of going to this school and pursuing my masters. This will be good for us, for our future.” Richard patiently explained to the tearful Maya.

Richard couldn’t leave Maya’s side until she stopped crying. When she finally stopped, her eyes were all puffed and red.

For the whole week since Maya found about Richard’s plan, she looked very gloomy. Although she understood and supported Richard, it was more of separation anxiety that was attacking her. Richard on his part was also experiencing the same. So, he thought of a solution that might at least lessen their pain.

“Maya, what worries you most with my being away?” He asked while they were having dessert after dinner in her condo unit. They were seated in the sofa watching TV.

“Hmm, ‘yung makalimutan mo ako. You might meet someone there while you’re away. What if, you get tempted or you fall in love with someone else” Her eyes started to get misty as the thought came across to her.

“Should I say the same? Ikaw pa naman, popular ka sa mga boys dito sa school. Yung what ifs mo, eh, what ifs ko rin.” He looked at her intently. As they gazed at each other, Maya began sobbing and buried her face in his chest.

“No, that won’t happen, Richard.” She said in between sob.

“Maya, I don’t know how you’ll take this but how about we get married before I leave for the U.S.? We can seek permission from our parents.” He said close to her ear.

Maya immediately reacted. “Naku, my mom will not approve. I’m still a freshman. Kailangan ko pang magtapos.”

“We’ll talk to them. We are just going to get married but we will not start a family yet. We can both study but at least, we’d feel more secure. What do you think?” He was attempting to make sense of out of his proposal. It didn’t matter, the bottom line is, he loves her.

~*~

Richard and Maya went home to San Nicolas for a weekend to talk to their parents. Seeking permission from their parents proved to be difficult particularly from Maya’s family. Mama Esme and Papa Roberto were more lenient since their son was already of legal age and would be graduating college in two months time.

On Maya’s side, there was an initial confusion when they told them. Richard brought his mother to Maya’s house for the needed support.

“Anak, magsabi ka ng totoo, buntis ka ba?” A visibly very upset Mama Teresita asked her daughter.

“Maaa. Ano bang tanung ‘yan.” Maya and Richard both had red face when the question came up.

It was her friend Mama Esme who answered for the two. “Tessie, mag hunos dili ka. Hindi gagawin ng anak ko yan sa anak mo. May mga pangarap ang mga bata at kasama sa pangarap nila ‘yung makasal sila.”

“Eh, bakit nagmamadali kayo” Her attention returned to Richard and Maya. “Kung talagang kayo, maghintay muna sana kayo. Richard, ikaw 22 na si Maya 18 pa lang. Pwede pagkatapos ni Maya ng college. Kung gusto nyo pag baba ng stage after graduation, mag pakasal kayo. Pero ngayon, napakaaga pa mga anak.”

“Tita, may point po kayo. Ang sa amin lang po, sana mapayagan n’yo kami. I’ll be leaving for the States after graduation and it would make us feel more assured if we can marry before I leave.” Richard explained; trying to convince his future mother-in-law.

By the end of the evening, Mama Teresita could only commit that she will think about it further. When the mother and daughter were left on their own, Maya asked.

“Ma, ‘wag ka magagalit ha. Kung buntis ba ako papayagan mo akong pakasal?”

“Maya!!” Mama Teresita exclaimed. Maya made a point.

“Sige na Ma. Payagan mo na ako.” She pleaded to her mother.

The following day, Richard got a message from Maya. “Babe, punta ka daw dito later. Parang papayag na.”

When Richard and Maya returned to Manila, they got their parents’ permission. The plan is to have a quiet wedding in Manila with just family members in attendance. The wedding will be in the summer after Richard’s graduation. In the meantime, their family will start processing the documentary requirements in San Nicolas and finalize them in Manila.

~*~

After the marriage plan and U.S. school issues were handled, Richard and Maya focused on their studies. The days went fast as the school year was about to end. After the finals, Maya’s friends decided to have a trip in Baguio for the Lenten holidays. It was a way for the group to relax and enjoy. Maya wanted to go but made sure that Richard was included in the trip. As Richard have completed his clearances and all, he decided to go with them. He has a family friend in Baguio, in fact, his godparent was living there. It was good opportunity to visit him and reconnect.

The trip to Baguio was joyous activity for the group. They visited a lot of places and had so much fun as friends. Richard got on well with Maya’s group. By the end of the trip, Richard told the group that he and Maya will stay for another day or two because they were visiting his godfather who lives in Baguio.

The trip in Baguio intensified Richard and Maya’s feelings for each other. It must have been the climate or the spirits of the mountains that made them feel so enamored with each other. In Baguio, they sealed their commitment to each other, bound to love each other forever.

Call it fate or destiny, that bind was tested a week after their return to Manila. The day after Richard’s graduation ceremony, the road they walked on forked and they took different paths.

Chapter 7 – Crazy little thing called Love

Since their first dinner, Richard and Maya became good friends. If they don’t see each other during the day, they would communicate via mobile phone. A day will not be complete without either of them checking on the other. They discuss everything and anything under the sun except their love life or lack of it. He didn’t ask about Anton and neither did she ask anything about his girlfriend or girlfriends. Both were afraid that asking personal questions might put their new found friendship in an awkward situation. They wanted their situation the way it is, whatever term it can be called.

The last day of school prior to the Christmas break was a turning point of their friendship.

Maya was with her friends at the cafeteria when Anton joined them. He had a gift for Maya that he handed to her while greeting her Merry Christmas. In greeting her, he kissed her on the cheek and she which she also reciprocated. The scene was seen by Richard who was about to enter the cafeteria that time. He felt a stab in his chest as he saw them embraced. Feeling hurt, he turned back and left the cafeteria.

Later, he got a message from Maya. “Where are you? Do you want to have lunch?”

“Am here at the Engineering study lounge. Thanks but won’t be able to join.” Was his reply.

When she received the message, she was curious why he would be in the study lounge when it was the last day of school. She decided to check on him.

“Richard, why are you here? Let’s go for lunch.” She invited him as soon as she found him.

“Wag na. I don’t want to impose on you guys.” The green-eyed monster was eating his heart. It was Christmas week; he was in agony thinking that Maya has a boyfriend. He never felt so bad being a member of SMP (Samahang Malalamig ang Pasko) until that day.

“Anong impose? We’re just having lunch. Anyway, if you don’t want to join us, how about coming to my house later. Let’s have dinner together.” She said with excitement. She had prepared a Christmas gift for him that she wanted to give to him that night. He agreed.

Maya’s lunch with her friends extended up to the afternoon. Their group have not gone out for several weeks, so they got engrossed in updating each other of their whereabouts. By late afternoon, they’ve decided to have an impromptu drinking party. Since Maya has her own place, the group decided to have the party there. Maya agreed, forgetting that she had invited Richard to come over that evening.

Ding. Dong. Ding. Dong

A tipsy Maya opened the door. Richard was surprised to see her flushed face and hear the singing in the background.

“Hi Richard. Please come in. Nandito silang lahat.” She stepped aside to let him walk past her.

“Hi guys.” He smiled at Maya’s friends. He looked around and found there were nine of them (Emman, Edcel, Jona, Gina, Jon-jay, Wilson, Amy, Nico, Edward). He felt disappointed realizing that he wouldn’t have Maya by himself that night. He thought that the invitation was just for him.

“Hi Richard. Thanks for joining us. Halika, pili ka na ng kanta mo dito.” Emman invited him to sit on the sofa beside him and passed him a song book. The group was in the middle of videoke session.

“Ha,ha,ha, puro 80s pala ang favorite nyo.” Richard commented as he browsed thru the list.

“Anong favorite? Walang choice ‘no. Ito kasing si Jona, hindi dinala yung mga bagong chips. Anyway, okay na rin, meron din ibang years dyan.” Emman responded gaily.

Maya came back with a plate of food for Richard. “Richard, kain ka muna.”

“Thank you.” He just smiled as he took the plate from her. Although initially disappointed, he decided to just enjoy the time with them.
Since he was already there, Richard selected his song and had a drink too. When it was his turn, he took the microphone and gamely sang Crazy Little Thing Called Love. It was supposed to liven up his spirit.

Because Maya’s friends made him feel comfortable, he got on well with them. He began to join in telling stories and jokes with them. Maya was seated across him and could see that she was enjoying too.

Ding. Dong. Ding. Dong. The doorbell rang again.

“Ay sigurado ko si Anton na ‘yan” Maya spoke as she stood up to open the door. She was correct. Anton entered the house carrying two plastic bags.

“Hey guys, I’m back.” He said as he proceeded to the dining area.

“Bro, bakit ang tagal mo? Akala naming umuwi ka na.” Edward asked.

“Bro, out-of-stock ng tubed ice d’yan sa 7-eleven. Pumunta pa kaya ako sa grocery ‘no.” Anton joined them in front of the videoke. “Hi Richard, good you’re here too. O Maya, kumpleto na mga close friends mo ha.” He commented.

Maya agreed. “Yes. So I’m happy that my first Christmas celebration dito sa Manila is with all my friends. So, let’s drink to that.”

“Cheers” Everyone raised their glasses with merriment. Then, the singing resumed with Anton taking his turn.

Richard stole a glance at Maya. If he was getting comfortable before Anton arrived, his green eyed monster side is getting agitated again. Maya was sitting so close to Anton. He sat there observing the two; feeling very jealous but unable to do anything.

Later, Anton stood up and took Maya’s hand to bring her to the dining area, away from the group.

“Hey, bakit?” Maya asked as soon as they were out of the group’s earshot.

“I just wanted to check with you, why is Richard here?” It was question that was in Anton’s head for a while now. He has been observing them and noticed that the two were stealing glances at each other.

“Wala, I invited him this evening. We were supposed to have dinner together. Kaya lang, nagkaroon nga tayo ng impromptu party. Kaya, eto, nandito tayong lahat.” She explained but knew that Anton wanted to find out more.

“Ganoon lang? Ano nililigawan ka n’yan ‘no?” He began to tease her; his eyes directed to where Richard was seated.

“Hindi, ah” but she couldn’t help smiling. She felth giddy with just the thought that Richard was courting her. It must be the alcohol affecting her.

“Hindi? Kaya pala kilig na kilig ka dyan. Pusta ko ‘yan yung secret love mo.” He teased her once more but this time tickling her side. She parried the tickling motions from him.

“Hoy, grabe, kung makapang bisto ka. Balik na tayo doon.” She shooed him away.

Anton and Maya returned to the group. Richard’s mood had obviously changed after observing how the two were behaving at the dining area. His heart constricted with jealousy; his eyes turning to tiny slits.

“Hey guys, madilim na. Shouldn’t we start going? May dinner date pa ‘tong friend natin.” Anton announced suddenly. Richard missed out the emphasis on word “friend”.

“Ay, teka muna. May request pa akong song from Richard. Hindi ako uuwi hanggat hindi n’ya nakakanta sa akin.” Emman voiced out his request. “Chard, paki kanta naman ‘tong favorite ko, please.” Emman handed him the microphone.

“Eh, Emman I might not know the song” Richard was about to argue but Emman was insistent.

“Naku alam mo ‘yan for sure. If not, tutulungan kita, duet tayo.” Kilig na kilig si Emman as the song started.

Emman added, “This song is dedicated to…. secret.” The group all laughed thinking it was for one of his crushes in school and that included Richard.
Richard knew the song and started to sing.

There’s a light
A certain kind of light .
That never shone on me
I want my life to be, lived with you

As he sang the 4th line, he was already into the song. He was thinking of Maya. He turned to glance at her and caught her staring at him. He got distracted a bit but managed to be within tune.

When it came to the “to love somebody, the way I love you”, part his eyes were fixed on her. It was as if the song was really meant for her.

In Maya’s head, “Shocks, bakit ganito naman maka tingin ‘to? Is it me or effect ng nainom ko? Tipsy lang pero okay naman ako. Baka s’ya. Anyway, kakilig naman. Lord, eto na ba ang Christmas gift mo?”

After Richard’s song, Emman did a final number. Eventually, it was Anton who insisted that they all go back home. Richard and Maya were left alone in her condo.

“Sandali lang, ha, may kukunin ako sa loob” Maya left him to get something in her room.

Richard remained standing in the sala waiting for her and at the same in dilemma what to do next. “Should I go home? Should I declare my love for her? She is in a relationship.” His heart constricted again. “But if she is, why did he leave us alone?” These were the questions running in his head.

Maya came back with gift and handed it to him “Richard, Merry Christmas.”

Maya moved close to him in an attempt to give him a peck on the cheek. Richard, not expecting her intention, slightly turned his face. With that slight movement, her lips landed on his lips.

It was an accidental kiss but both were surprised. Maya blushed and stuttered, “Ay sorry… gumalaw ka kasi.” She looked down, feeling embarrassed with what just happened.

At that moment, Richard forgot about his dilemma and placed his finger under her chin and tilted it upwards so he could see her face. Their eyes locked; they were gauging each other’s emotions. Swiftly, Richard pressed his lips on Maya’s. At first, it was tentative; waiting for her reaction but there was none. He was about to kiss her again when he suddenly remembered.

“Maya, you have a boyfriend, right?” He whispered; his lips just a two inches away from hers. He placed his hand on her arm ready to distance himself; sense of propriety taking over his body.

“Sino?” Maya responded in a whisper too. She wasn’t thinking properly.

“Si Anton? Di ba sabi mo si Anton ang boyfriend mo?” His heartbeat was racing. She was too close to him that he’s having an inner struggle whether to follow his head or his heart. As he looked at her red lips, he was very much tempted to kiss her again.

“Dati, but we’re just friends now.” Out of her own volition, she made a bold move and kissed him. When her lips touched his, he abandoned his self-control and responded to her ardently. His hands which were on her arms started to move to her back and embraced her tightly. On her part, Maya’s hands found its way to his neck and encircled it. Their kissed deepened as if they’ve just been liberated. After the breath taking kiss, they uttered at the same time.

“I love you, Maya.” “I love you Ricky.”

“Whaaat? Ginawa mo ‘yun girl?” A very surprised Emman asked Maya.

“Oo. Kasi naman I was in the bookstore. I saw this particular card that I thought was very appropriate to express what I was feeling. So binili ko.

At dahil nasa akin na, I decided to write him a note and send to him.” Maya explained to her best friend. She had been very close to Emman since she entered college three years ago. They are in the same batch, same class, taking up legal management in one of the top universities in Manila.

“Yes, girl, I understand that you may have liked the card and all. But to actually send it to him, it’s so unlike you.” Emman couldn’t believe that Maya went to the extent of sending a card to her so-called crush.

Maya dela Rosa, 20 years old, is well-known in school as friendly, outgoing and full of positivity in her disposition. She is quite popular with male students but she’s more focused in her studies than dating. She rarely had a crush in school so Emman was surprised by her bold move.

“Ngayon lang Emman. Anyway, what harm would it do me. Hindi ko naman nilagay ang name ko. Besides, last week na natin sa law firm nila. Kailangan malaman na n’ya how I feel for him.” She justified her action.

“Ay, ewan ko sa’yo. Gusto mo palang malaman yung feelings mo so why didn’t you sign your name. I guess handwritten pa ‘yung love letter mo, ano?” He further probed.

“Syempre, alangan naman i-type ko sa card. Dapat personalized.” She proudly declared to her friend.

“Naku… talaga naman. Naloka ka na yata. Anyway, sige. Minsan ka lang naman mabaliw. Sa dami naman ng may crush sa’yo din pa kay Atty. Richard Lim ka nagkagusto. At saka, he is so much older than you. Ano bang nakita mo doon?”

“Emman, ang gwapo kaya n’ya. The eyes, the nose, that killer smile, ‘yung build and that mystery around him. Don’t you find him sexy. Kakakilig, friend.” She was in a dreamy mode as she described Richard Lim.

“Kaya naman pala ang sipag-sipag mong mag-report sa office. Kahit tapos na ang duty natin, nakiki-overtime ka rin sa mga office girls. Kung tutuusin, lampas ka na sa 200 hours OJT requirements.

“Okay lang. I’m enjoying and learning during the training.” She responded to her friend.

“Well, at least there’s something positive in all your efforts. Anyway, good luck na lang sa letter mo. Hopefully, ma guess nya na ikaw ang nagpadala.” Emman’s parting shot.

“Emman, I don’t expect him to find out it’s me. Para sa akin, enough na maparating ko sa kanya ang feelings ko.” She said with conviction.

“Ay ewan ko sa’yo. Kaloka ka talaga.” Emman left Maya sitting in the college cafeteria.

At Lim, Orlino, Evangelista & Associates Law Offices.

“Liza, can you come over here?” Richard dropped the phone’s receiver after summoning his executive assistant.

A few seconds later, a woman came into his office “Yes, Boss.” She asked while readying the notebook she brought with her.

The object of Maya’s fantasy has received her card. He is Richard Lim, 32 years old, good looking; a Chinese-Filipino. He is one of the junior partners of his father’s law firm.

“Where did this card come from?” Richard was waving an envelope in front of her.

“Huh? eh di sa mail Sir.” She looked the envelope and it had the Ortigas central post office stamp on it.

“No, Liza. What I actually meant was, who could have sent me this card.” He handed her the card for her to see.

Liza took the silver and blue colored card. She got curious just by reading the cover message “I’ve admired you from afar, how about a closer encounter?” There was a telescope, stars, moon and heart as part of its design.

She turned the page to read the handwritten message.

Dear Richard,
Everyday I see you and I often wonder what would it be like to be close to you. You’re a mystery to me. I hope that in the future, we could get to know each other. For now, you are my inspiration. So, please keep smiling.

I love your dimple.

Take care.
(Maya signed using a heart shape)

After reading, Liza couldn’t stop herself from breaking into a laughter.

“Ha,ha, ha. Sir, you have an admirer.” She teased him.

“Liza, that’s not funny. How do I know that is not a stalker? It’s the first time I got that kind of a letter.” He was in quandary whether to appreciate or get upset with bold act of the sender.

“Liza, who do you think sent this?” Richard asked again his assistant.

“Hmm, I am guessing the sender is a girl… a young girl.” Liza responded.

“I think so too. Do you think it’s from one of the OJTs? How many do we have this year?” Richard assumed it was one of their on-the-job trainees.

“Right now sir, we have 5. They are assigned in different departments. Yes, it’s possible that it may be one of the girls. Everytime na may OJTs tayo, ikaw at si Ryan lang naman ang nagiging crush ng mga ‘yon” Liza supported his idea.

Richard shook his head, “Anyway, if it’s one of them, I think these are harmless childish acts. Alright, let’s just forget this.” He unconsciously placed the card in his side drawer.

Maya excitedly stayed beyond office hours to help one of the legal assistants in their typing job. It was Thursday and the following day would be her last day of OJT. She couldn’t resist taking the opportunity of spending more hours at the office if only to see Richard Lim. While she has not gone past the Hi, Hello sir stage with him, it was enough that she see him every time she was at their office.

During her OT work, there were only a few people left at that time and as usual, she made sure she would on the area where she could most likely see him.

As she was finishing her task, the main door’s bell buzzed. She was the one nearest the door, so went to the reception area to receive the guest.

“Good evening, is Richard still in the office?” A tall, voluptuous woman smiled at Maya as she opened the door.

“Yes, Mam. May I know your name so I can let him know you are here?” She extended courtesy to the woman.

The woman just looked at her from head to foot before saying, “I’m Hershey. Anyway, he knows me. I can just go directly to his office.” The lady walked towards Richard office.

Maya caught up with before she was able to enter his room, “Eh, ma’m excuse po, what can I offer you? Would you like coffee, tea, juice or water?” She offered the standard beverage that their firm offers to their visitors.

“I’ll have coffee.. Ah, make it two please.” Hershey went inside the room and Maya thought she overhead her say “Darlin’ how are you?”

Maya left to prepare two cups of coffee. A few minutes later, she was on her way to his office carrying a tray with the coffee. After light knock, she opened the door. She was surprised to see Richard and Hershey kissing each other. He’s back was turned against the door but she saw Hershey’s hand wrapped around his neck.

They didn’t hear Maya’s knock on the door. Because of shock, Maya’s hand shook while holding the tray. The coffee cups collided that made a breaking sound and interrupted the two who were kissing.

Richard turned around with his eyes in tiny slits and furrowed eyebrows; seemingly upset with the disturbance.

Maya could only say to them “Ayy, I’m sorry sir, ma’m. Papalitan ko na lang po ang coffee n’yo.” She immediately closed the door of his room.

Back in the pantry, she fanned herself using her hands to calm herself. She was shocked and very disappointed to see him kissing his visitor. As she recalled what the two were doing, she could feel pain in her heart. She asked herself, crush ko ba s’ya or first love na ba ‘to. Seeing him kissing someone else produced tiny stabs in her chest. She was teary eyed while she was preparing new cups of coffee.

Later that night, a sobbing Maya was on the phone talking to Emman.
Sniff. Sniff. “Emman, ayoko na sa kanya.” She told her friend in between sobs.

“Wehhh. Nuong isang araw lang crush na crush mo. Ngayon, ayaw mo na. Anong nangyari?” Emman asked her.

“Bes, I saw him kissing yung bisita n’yang Hershey ang pangalan. Emman, may girlfriend na pala sya.” She shared to her friend.

“Oh, so may girlfriend na pala. Therefore, maki-pag break ka na dyan sa ini-ilusyon mong boyfriend. There are many fishes in the ocean, girl.” Emman consoled her.

“Tama ka Emman. From now on, Richard Lim is my ex future boyfriend.” When Maya ended her call with Emman, she spoke in front of the mirror. “Richard Lim, from now on you’re someone that I used to love.”
