Chapter 5 – Gallant
Dinner was casual. They went to a restaurant at Clark Quay famous for their Chili crab. The place was swarming with tourist, and it took them awhile to get a seat. After a long wait at the queue, they were shown to an unoccupied seat outside overlooking a river, and a sight of colorful lights.
As Richard pulled out her chair, Maya glanced around at her surroundings, and the customers – there’s certainly a mix of people here – most of them were wearing casual clothes from shorts to slacks, shirts, so she’s in good company.
A waiter appeared at their table, and handed them a huge leather bound menus. They browse through it, and decided on Chili Crab, steamed buns, steamed fish, and vegetables.
A comfortable silence blanketed them as they waited for their order. Looking back at their activities since morning, Maya smiled at the thought that this is actually her first outing with a man. Though it can’t be called a date, she enjoyed every minute of it especially with a charming companion. A perfect company, who kept glancing at her.
“When is your flight back to Manila?” Richard asked.
“Tomorrow evening. How about you?”
“I still have some business to do here, so I’ll probably stay for another three weeks. Why don’t you stay for a couple of days more, and accompany me?” Richard ventured looking at her in a serious expression.
Maya gathered her wits at his invitation, and replied in a somewhat cool, and unaffected manner, “I wish I could stay longer, but I couldn’t. I’m back to reality tomorrow, back to work.”
“Is there a special someone waiting for you in Manila?”
“None that I know of. Why?”
“Nothing.” Richard secretly smiles.

“Tell me, Richard. What do you do for a living?” Maya inquired casually while sipping her tea. She tried to pick up the conversation with him where it had been interrupted before the food they ordered came in.
Richard clenched his jaw, and thought about on how much he should tell her. He was enjoying this animosity with her, and doesn’t want her to connect him to the person she met a year ago in a flight from Tokyo, and to the name ‘Richard Lim, the President and owner of Lim Aviation’.
“Was that a tough question?” Maya joked.
He inclined his head in a slow nod, a hint of smile lingering in his eyes, but he remained frustratingly silent. He simply looked at her, and gave her a dimpled smile that did crazy things to her heartbeat. She must be crazy to be drawn to this man – a complete stranger who had spared his time to accompany her.
“Did you know that you’re a very relaxing company?” He asked softly.
“Thank you, and I think I know what you’re trying to do?” Maya replied, and smiled, understanding his deliberate evasiveness. “Alright, let’s not talk about personal matter.”
Maya noticed that he was extremely evasive when it came to actually talking about himself, but positively insatiable when it comes into probing about herself. All she learned about him is that he’s in Singapore for work, and will be leaving for Manila in three weeks’ time.

“Where are you staying?” Richard asked casually while paying for their dinner.
“Crowne Plaza Hotel in Changi. Why?”
“I’ll accompany you to your hotel.” Richard informed her in a tone not subject for any arguments.
Maya looked at him as if he’d grown horns. “Richard, huwag na. You’ve already done so much for me today.”
“I insist. It will give my mind rest to know that you’re safely back to your hotel.” Richard cut off her words before she could say anything. The truth is he wanted to prolong this day with her if possible, intrigued and drawn by her persona.
“If it’s not an inconvenience to you.” Maya responded to him after a few minutes of hesitation. A little more time with him won’t hurt, she thought. In fact, she welcomed it for she really enjoyed his company. If only, she can meet him again after today, then she wouldn’t have to grasp whatever little time they have left. She was tempted to ask him of his contact no. in Manila, but that would be too forward of her. He could be a married man for all she knows, but there wasn’t any ring on his finger, which made her feel better.
“Not an inconvenience at all.” He interrupted her thoughts as he took her hand, and placed it at the crook of his arms as they went out of the restaurant, and walked towards the taxi stand.

Richard opened the cab door for Maya as she slid into the backseat. He followed her inside giving the driver the location of their destination before seating comfortably beside her.
Before they can even fasten their seatbelt, the driver floored the car, and sent it angling across the street, and shooting into the three-lane traffic. Maya gasped, and grabbed Richard’s knee for balance, while Richard curved his arm around Maya’s shoulder to hold her against him.
Richard looked at Maya’s hand resting unconsciously on his knee, and realized that her instinct trusted him even if she’s not aware of it.
When the cab was already in the highway, and the speed became steady, Maya started to remove her hand on his knee, but Richard was quick to respond without looking at her. He covered her hand with his own; then twined his fingers with hers and held it on his thigh. The gesture startled Maya as she looked down at the masculine hand engulfing hers with a treacherous feeling of safety that came with the warm handclasp.
After a few minutes of silence, a jolt streaked up Maya’s spine as his thumb slowly drew circles on her palm, and brushed his thumb over the delicate veins of her wrist. She caught her breath, her heart swelling as she focused at the beautiful male hand, watching his finger feathered along the tender flesh of her palm while her body seemed to melt from the touch.
He was giving her mixed signals. She tried to look perfectly casual, while the simple touch of a finger on her palm made her pulse continue to escalate. When the movement finally stopped, her pulse slowed to normal. She felt foolish to be susceptible to what was probably an idle touch on his part.
Partly out of curiosity, she experimented, and fiddled lazily with his hand, moving her thumb inside his palm in a subtle exploration. She glanced at him to see if there’s a noticeable effect on him, but he seemed to have dozed off leaning on the seat with his eyes close. Since he seemed not to object, she continued to what she was doing marveling at the contrast of his masculine hand with hers.
Richard gave up all pretense of trying not to be affected by what she’s doing, and opened his eyes looking at her bent head. He gazed at her as desire flowed throughout his entire nerve system while she delicately moved her fingers unto his sensitized palm. His heart was beating in a heavy tempo as his mind flew with lewd thoughts of her, of letting go of his baser instinct. It was torture having to sit still, aroused as if he’d been indulging in an intense sexual foreplay instead of merely holding her hand.
Maya pulled her gaze from their clasp hands and looked up at him, and saw that he’s awake. He was studying her very closely. “What are you thinking about?” He murmured, his eyes ablaze with unspoken emotions.
“Chicken feet. Siomai. Chili crab. And our taxi driver who thinks he’s in an F1 race.” She jokingly enumerated; then shook her head, negating the flippant answer, and quietly told him the truth in a serious tone. “I was thinking about you, that is… with a not so wholesome thoughts.”
Richard drew a ragged deep breath, and closed his eyes as he kept his silence. His handclasp tightened.
Blissfully unaware of the new, dangerous ground she was treading, Maya leaned on the seat, letting her hand be clasped as if it’s just a normal thing to do.

“Thank you Richard. This day wouldn’t be as productive and enjoyable without you. I’m really glad to have met you.” Maya said when they arrived at her hotel.
“You’re welcome.”
“Should we have our photo taken?” Maya cheerfully suggested.
Richard was taken aback by her suggestion, and looked at her in bewilderment. “Are you serious? I’ll pass. I’m not really that photogenic.”
“Don’t worry. I don’t plan to put this in a rat hole. Di ren kita ipapakulam. Sige na, it’s something to remember you by – how one gallant person spared his time for me today.” Maya linked her arm to his, and made making sure that he won’t bolt. She quickly called the guy in the reception to take their photo using her cell phone.
Richard smiled and gazed at her tenderly. If the eyes are the windows to one’s soul, then he can see himself clearly reflected in hers, and saw himself gallant in her eyes.
[Flash]
Richard blinked, and realized that the photo was already taken.
Maya thanked the guy who took their photo, and reached for her cell phone without bothering to look at the photo.
She turned to Richard, and stared at his profile – he’s unbelievably good looking, and he can’t seem to take his eyes off her. Her attraction to him doubled that she actually have to concentrate on breathing evenly when he looked at her in what seems to be a borderline inappropriate.
“Goodbye, Richard.” Maya said and tried to ignore how he looked at her as she reached out to give him a quick hug. After today, she won’t be seeing him, she thought, as she hesitatingly turned her face to give him a peck on his cheeks.
“Goodnight, Maya.” Richard said as he held her tightly a little bit longer. He buried his face on her hair, savoring her scent and placed a lingering kiss on the side of her neck. He was sorely tempted to do more than that, but not today. Some other time, he thought, as he reluctantly release her and saw her blushed profusely.
